Dual Monitor lower FPS in game?????

Thread Starter
I recently purchases another Dell 2412M. So I'm running stretch 1920x1200 which is awesome. (I'm still using just one monitor for gaming). I notice significant FPS decrease when I'm play Crysis Warhead and Starcraft II. So I ran 3dmark11 again. I'm getting P8105 instead of P8570 blinksmiley.gif

I remember I was playing Crysis Warhead on Extreme setting while getting steady 50-60FPS. Now I have to turn it down to High setting. Is the dual monitor set up the cause of the FPS drop???
I need advice pls, thx thumb.gif

The rest of my system are....

Gigabyte GA-Z68X-ud3h-b3 rev 1.3
2500K oc to 4.5GHZ
2 x MSI 560TI 2GB version in SLI
RipjawsX F3 1600 8GB X.M.P

Hey ya,

Well, this is perfectly normal, your GPU is having to drive a larger resolution therefore it'll put more stress on the card. So yes, a significant drop in FPS is perfectly normal.

Since you were originally running games at 1920x1200, and you add another monitor now you're basically adding another 1920x1200 for the GPU to keep up with.

Your GPU is stressing itself to keep up rendering the extra resolution, thus the FPS drop. Perfectly normal though as compuman145 said.

Thx for the quick reply first of all. I'm not sure if i made this clear. I'm just playing game on 1 monitor at a time, both monitor are identical 1920x1200. So It's like playing game on one monitor while I can browse internet/movie (Depends on the game "duo monitor" setting). http://www.slizone.com/object/sli_multi_monitor.html I thought only running dual or tri eyefinity with 3xxx or 5xxxx resolution will lower FPS. Guess not lol. The drop in FPS were pretty significant too in all games. Time to upgrade to 590 GTX I guess frown.gif

I actually edited my previous post, but for some reason it wouldn't change.

Having another monitor running will decrease FPS since the GPU still does extra work rendering the other monitor, normally shouldn't be too stressing though. I'd go SLI 580 though rather than a 590, lots of posts regarding issues with it.

The 590GTX won't give you an increase tbh. The 560's will probably be on par with it, unplug one monitor to verify this is the issue before you start replacing hardware.

there's no reason a 2GB card should have problems with just 2 monitors. Have you checked to see if its a problem caused by SLI?

When I run 3Dmark11, something pop up said. "System performance low, disable Aero Theme" something like that. So I disable aero theme and ran 3dmark11. I realize when I disable aero theme the second monitor will stay at desktop while doing the 3dMark11 performance test instead of going "black". I ended up with score of P7100....rolleyes.gif So I oc my gpu to 950MHZ and went 3DMark again with aero disable. I'm getting P7700. I enable aero theme on my third run without OCing the GPU (So the second monitor will go blank;black while running the performance test). My score..... P8560...My hypothesis is that even if you running a game while doing nothing on the second monitor, you will still see a 16% performance decrease mad.gif This explains the significant drop in FPS in all games.

well yes it has to process twice as many pixels, but isnt doing quite as much work to keep up with the one you're not gaming on, also try OC'ing the video memory instead of the core

Aero transparency is heavy on the GPU thus lowering your performance.

I have 2 monitors myself (1 main for gaming/main workbenches and a second for monitoring, extra windows etc.) and I don't notice big FPS differences.

2 possible causes for this(I think):

1) I do have 'Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration' set to 'Single display performance mode' in the nVidia control panel (it's under 'Manage 3D settings'). Might take a look at that.

2) I don't have transparency enabled. personally it doesn't add anything to the user experience and it isn't particularly good looking either. Otherwise Aero is still enabled aside from transparency. Color is black and looks as good/better than the default transparent windows.

Hope this helps you enjoy multiple displays (because it is handy smile.gif ) without having to suffer that ugly basic W7 mode ^^
