Just built an i7 gaming rig today - and I'm getting a blue screen and gonna cry :(

Hi guys.... I'm a college student and spent a little over 1k to build an i7 rig this past week. I got everything in today and set it up. This was my 2nd build.

All the parts used are in my sig. I booted up, made sure everything is connected to mobo, and all display is working properly.

I got into BIOS and immediately set boot priority to CD/ROM drive to boot Windows XP since I only have the Windows 7 upgrade CD so I needed to put some other windows on the Bare harddrive.

I uplugged the 500gb Westerdigital caviar green storage drive I have and ONLY let the OCZ agility 3 plugged in to boot windows.

I got to the windows XP loading screen and then got a blue screen:
DSC00446.jpg

I bought the i7 , gtx 570, ocz agility III, EVGA motherboard, and Patriot Xtreme RAM on black FRIDAY.

The Power supply, optical drive, and 500gb storage drive I'm re-using from another build.

What could this be? I was getting errors on my last computer, and I used the same power supply. I figure it can't be the optical drive nor 500gb western digital since that isn't even plugged in.

But I have heard of horrible reviews and with some SSDs and people having blue screens and errors trying to boot for the first time.

I dont know, I'm really bummed, I started building this computer today at 7:30PM and now it's 3:57AM, and I'm sad and delirious. Can anyone help me?

The computer is still on with that blue screen...should I just do a hard "power off" or maybe reset? manual shutdowns don't affect the physical components of the computer do they?

It looks like it's the SSD. OCZ is your problem. smile.gif Did you get BSOD's on the previous build and did you use the same RAM?

First of all, get some sleep. Turn it off and have a nap, computers can wait. I would try to install windows first on your 500GB, just see if you can get XP up and running. Then, if you can, wack on windows 7 and see if your SSD works wants that is all set up.

Hi, thanks for responding.

I am NOT using the same RAM. This is brand NEW Patriot Viper Xtreme RAM DDR3 1600mhz I ordered on black Friday.

The ONLY parts I'm reusing are my old Power supply (hec XP 1080), optical drive (LiteON) and 500GB Western Digital, BUT I don't even have that plugged in right now, Only the 60gb OCZ Agility SSD.

I just put everything together, this was my first Intel build and I was very meticulous. I hit the power button and was happy that I had all the lights and fans turn on and I got to POST. I went to BIOS to change boot up priority to the AGILITY to install windows.

I still have the computer on right now, on the blue screen, should I just manual shutdown? Where should I go from here?

^^This x10 wink.gif

When ready, install XP on the 500gb first to narrow it down.

Remember tomorrow is another day thumb.gif
I know how you feel.

Edit: No sense leaving on the blue screen up, shut down and try safemode. Or is windows not installed yet?

There's no harm in simply turning off the power supply toggle switch because no OS is loaded, so there's no chance of corruption. After your computer is off, unplug the power supply from the wall and open up your computer case and take out 1 stick of ram. When you boot up, get into the BIOS screen and manually enter the timings instead of using AUTO. (check both the VDIMM and timings and make sure they're corrrect)
Let us know if everything is fine and we can help from there. First thing you need to rule out is your memory.
Edit: Btw, does your BIOS have a built in Memtest?

0x0000007b is very often INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Check first the small things:

- SSD plugged in propperly.
- Try another SATA port on your MB
- Check that you have AHCI in bios.
and all those small things.

I see that you are using the CD-ROM from the last computer and that the BSOD was there as well. Could be that the CD-ROM is damaged in some way. Do you have another CD-ROM at hand? Try the following:

- Reinstall XP, power off, unplugg the CD-ROM, 500GB drive and boot just with the GTX 570 and the SSD.

If the BSOD still occures you may have a faulty PSU or SSD.

Guys, thank's so much for the responses, you don't know how much I appreciate it.

I read all the replies above, and a few of you suggested it. I googled around and found that the error message has to do with ACHI mode being on in BIOS - for some reason the computer wants IDE.

Well, low and behold, I reset the comp. , switched to IDE and it's loading the XP.... WTH? Why? What's the logic to this?

When I install the Windows 7 upgrade over this XP, do I need to revert back to ACHI mode?

Crossing my fingers nothing else goes wrong, but thus far, I appreciate the help so freaking much.

If you have an SSD and want to install Win7, have the mode set to AHCI, however first flash the SSD firmware to get rid of the BSODs.
