TES: Skyrim Troubleshooting and Tips (Updated for Blood on the Ice quest suggestions!)

** IMPORTANT **

For those of you who are unable to start the Blood on the Ice quest in Windhelm and the suggested steps do not help, please check my last post in this thread with some experimental steps to try and let me know if it works.

** End Important Message **

So I have noticed a lot of people coming into the discussion threads asking for assistance to various issues due to the resolution being buried under pages of discussion. The goal here is to consolidate all these things into a singular, updated post to provide easy reading for all Skyrim fans hoping to enjoy the game.

When to try the 4GB launcher?

- If you are experiencing frequent CTD's, typically occurring after fast travels or entering/exiting a location
- If you notice a lot of textures and meshes looking either multicolored or gummy candy purple
- If the game experiences more than normal slow downs while rendering more textures and visuals
- http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013

The reason this is helps you is because the genius developers at Bethesda caps the game at 2GB of memory address. A lot of people, especially those running it at higher settings, ini tweaks, or mods, tend to run out of memory playing the game. Just like with the bat file in Minecraft, this increases the memory address to a whopping 4GB.

Game no longer starts after patch:

- With the auto-updater, some gamers seem to have lost their TESV.exe file, rending any launcher useless
- Right click on Skyrim in your Steam Library
- Left flick on Properties
- Click on the tab Local Files
- Click on "Verify the integrity of game cache"
- It should now work though you may need to chance your settings again

I lost my follower!

- First take a deep breath and relax. This happens to people a lot. There are MANY reasons why your follower disappeared and typically death is NOT one of them.
- If you are in a dungeon, you either moved too fast for your NPC to follow. If you can use the wait action, that typically respawns them next to you, otherwise it means there are still live aggressive mobs in the dungeon and your follower ran into them and are following them.
- Quests and faction locations that you do not own will also cause followers to leave or wait depending on what is going on. For example, a quest that involves a new NPC follower will make your existing follower leave your service. In this case, go back to where they originated from unless they are also your wife, then go home. If they are not home, check right outside where they first left.
- If you cannot find them anywhere (home, where they were last seen, ect) and you do not want to reload a save, use the following console commands

- help "name" 0 -> This command will pull up any and all info about whatever name you stick into the quotes. Presumably, this is going to be your follower's name. It will give you something called a NPC ID
- player.placeatme NPCID -> This command will the NPC to you
- Close the console to allow changes to load
- Now, depending on if the NPC has actually died or not, it may not like you and follow you anymore. In those cases, don't worry about it. With console commands, they will come around very fast:
- Open console again and click on NPC to get their RefID
- setrelationshiprank player 4 -> This increases their relationship with you to the highest
- addfac 5C84D 1 -> This will get them to provide you with the follower dialogue again

* Please note that this actually generates another copy of the NPC should that NPC still actively exist within your game. Should this happen, simply click on the newer NPC while in console and type in Disable

TESV.exe freezes while loading game:

- This is usually caused by one of the following; bad ini, bad save, or bad mods
- Restore your ini first from a backup and see if issue persists
- If restoring the INI file does not help, pull up from an earlier save to see if mods load
- If it is not an issue with the save, then it is most likely a mod or more causing it
- First remove any interface or map changing mods, then test. if issue persists, try removing even texture mods
- If after all that you still cannot fix it, come back and let me know

Dragon skeletal corpses staying:

- Launch console and target skeleton
- Type in disable
- Walah! No more dragon body!

You want to marry Elisef, Karita, Lisette, Lynly, Alva, or anyone else and they won't give you the time of day?

- Open up console and target them
- Enter console command addfac 19809 1
- Enter console command setrelationshiprank player 4
- Bust out your awesome Amulet of Mara
- Woo your bride to be
- ???
- Profit!
- Please be careful of when you woo, as force marrying certain quest NPC's before their quest usefulness expires can break the game for you.

Make any NPC your follower:

- Launch console and target NPC
- addfac 5C84D 1
- Close console and talk to them

Customizing your NPC Follower

Your NPC follower's are capped at the your level once they first spawn as your follower. This means they can really suck as time goes on. The following commands help you customize your follower

- SetClass classID (This is useful if you want a specific combat behavior such as Spellsword or Nightblade)
- SetAV skill value (Assign values for health, stealth, block, ect)
- SetLevel value (This sets their overall level)
- AddSpell spellID (This adds the spell to the follower's abilities)

If your follower is a pansy and you want to make him a bit better?

- setav confidence 4, this will increase your follower's battle confidence to the max and transform he/she from a sniveling ball of tears and snot to a confident, dashing sidekick eager to charge into battle. Now depending on the actual prowess of said follower, results may vary.
- setav aggression 1, this makes it so the follower will be less likely to aggro you when you accidentally attack it as well as less likely to auto aggro an enemy mob until you do first. This can help when you are sneaking around that your follower trails you instead of attacking first and exposing both of you.

* These tweaks are designed to make your follower into a more involved follower, but crap will still be crap even if you sprinkle some gold dust on it. For instance, if you have a farmer act as your follower, he is going to get face rolled no matter how gung-ho he is.

Marriage Glitch and Solutions:

- Dead body at the door causing everyone to stop: This is supposedly fixed with patch 1.2
- Bride leaving you at the altar: Let her leave and go out the door immediately after her. Once you talk to her, she will go back into the temple.
- Bride does not wait for instructions on new home: You can either meet up with bride at her home and tell her where to move to or catch up with her as she is leaving and tell her then

How to divorce your spouse:

- Kill her alone in a private area, such as your house. You can try the kill command, but results are questionable.
- Open up console and enter command resetquest relationshipmarriage
- Enter command setstage relationshipmarriage 10 to reset the amulet part of the quest
- Resurrect your spouse if you so choose and enter command setrelationshiprank player 4 to get her friendly again
- Go to the Temple of Mara and buy another amulet
- The marriage dialogue should now come back

Cannot fast travel after updating to 1.2

The issue you are having appears to be caused by a corrupt "Skyrim - Interface.bsa" file. Since you have 7, this is relatively easy to fix. Here is what you should try to do:

- Find "Skyrim - Interface.bsa" file in the Skyrim/Data folder
- Right click the file and go to Properties
- Click on the last tab called Previous Versions and wait for it to pull up previous versions
- Find the version you want and click on Copy
- Save file to Desktop for easy access
- Append .old to existing bsa file and copy in the previous version from desktop to replace
- Please let me know if this fixes it!

* This only applies for Windows 7 machines with System Restore enabled. If you do not have Windows 7 or a System Restore enabled, your option is to copy from an existing backup of that file.

After Alt-Tab out, I can no longer Alt-Tab back into the game, I only see a black screen!

- Bethesda is really stupid about practical programming and does not offer a full screen window mode
- Hit Alt-Tab again to pull up your Task bar
- Click on the Skyrim tab in the Task bar
- Game should load back in fine, though you may notice some poor texture rendering

I cannot unlock any Dragon Shouts or Words even though I have souls?

- Simply clicking on it or hitting Enter will not unlock the Shout or Word; you actually have to hit R
- Since this is a console port, UI is not very smart for PC's so if you needed help with this one, don't feel bad, many other people struggled with it as well.

Unable to start "Blood on the Ice" quest in Windhelm

This is arguably the most bugged quest in the game and a shame really, given that it involves one of the best houses if you are the type to care about that. The following steps may at times resolve your bugs or they may not, depending on what flags you have triggered already.

- First it appears you cannot have played for more than 245 game days.
- You have to have at least entered and exited Windhelm 4 times
- There may be a level restriction as on 3 play throughs where I got the option I was 11, 15, 17.
- If you fulfill those requisites and it does not pop up for you, try going in there at 2 AM
- If this does not work, try picking the lock to Hjirem and exploring the bloody chest and the hidden room
- If you are still not prompted by this time, talk to Viola and then Calixto
- If none of this still works, please proceed to experimentation commands at page 3 of this thread

How to customize your saves through console:

- Open console window
- Type in save nameOfSave

* Will experiment later to see if you can customize it further with usage of ""

* There will be more and feedback, suggestions, and contributions will be greatly welcomed. I will continue this later.

Anybody know a fix for the game not remembering your video settings? Every time I launch the game, it reconfigures my video settings, and no matter what I change, it defaults to Windowed 800x600 low everything. Even if I change it to not windowed, when I launch the game, it doesn't read the settings. This is after the 1.2 update. frown.gif

This is going to be under your SkyrimPref file. It is either corrupted or you have not properly setup the settings through the launcher first. Either way, you can either delete the SkyrimPref file or manually edit the resolution inside it.

File Path:
C:\Users\Username\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\

The content that you want to edit are the following:

iSize H=1200
iSize W=1920

Mine is currently set at 1920x1200. Best way to find it is to search for iSize.

Thanks for taking the time to make this thread I'm sure it will help allot of people out. I had lost Lydia in a snow storm hehe and after searching Dragons Reach and the whole of Whiterun I was pretty sure she didn't make it sad-smiley-002.gif But after finding this thread the other day and tried the command on here it worked a treat and Lydia ported to me and she was in Blades armour I was like what the hell then she said "Hello friend, I'm with the Blades now". Wasn't really bothered was just curious if she was still alive but funny how she ended up making her own way and joining the Blades rolleyes.gif Instead of going back to Whiterun. I did have the find a follower quest open tho so that must have triggered somehow even tho I never spoke to the Blades about her joining.
Anyway got another problem and was hoping there is a fix but isn't game breaking just an annoyance, its that some of my quests under misc that I have completed and already turned in for the reward are still there for example bounties for the Jarl in Dawnstar, Help the people of the reach 5/5 and also a few others, again thanks for the help thumb.gif

No problem! Glad it helped! While bots regularly wander around Skyrim (some travel slower than others), I have never actually heard of one actually joining a faction by itself, especially a Housecarl like Lydia. You might have accidentally talked to Delphine about followers and did not realize it. Either way though, now you have no one protecting that crappy house in Whiterun. LOL

For your bug regarding the unfinished quests, try this:

- help "quest name" 0
- setstage questID 10

This should force complete the quest for you.

not game breaking, just a slight annoyance.

Two ways to try dealing with this.

- resetquest questName will reset the entire quest itself
- setstage questID 10 should bump you past Faralda
