why isnt this some big news that everybody should be enraged about? especially all us rampage iii gene/formula/extreme owners?

When your chipset x58 was released, we didn't have drives that could take advantage of 6gb/s like we do now.

Besides, you'll see 99% of the benefit of a ssd on the 3gb/s ports anyway. Sequential speeds aren't used as often as you think.

so wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a sata2 ssd rather than a sata3? Sorry if that's a dumb question, just looking into ssd's myself.

that is correct in most cases, im running an intel sata II SSD, it still has the same snap to it when you power your pc on and boot to windows. , amongst other things.

Intel's z68 setup is 4 Sata 2 ports and 2 Sata 3 ports.

Intel RST drivers will power both types of ports.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, I myself own a Rampage III Extreme and by what you're saying my computer would run faster on an intel 3Gb/s vs a Marvell 6Gb/s. I switch the two and my sequential is much lower

Sequential means nothing in real world use.

If you are using a SSD use the native Intel or AMD SATA 3Gb/s or SATA 6Gb/s ports, I advise that you do NOT use the Marvell ports for your SSD, they do not support TRIM, they are capped at ~375MB/s and deliver very poor 4K read and write performance compared to the Intel and AMD SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s ports. I also would suggest you not use the Marvell ports for your HDD either. Only the DVD drive if anything. If not just disable it in the UEFI/BIOS to cut 2-3 seconds off your boot. Here is an example of why the Marvell ports are trash. (link)

"When your chipset x58 was released, we didn't have drives that could take advantage of 6gb/s like we do now"
But when I bought my R3F (april 2011) we did have these drives, as we do today and yet these mobos are still being sold with "True SATA III 6 Gb/s" ports. Even now that we know it's IMPOSSIBLE.
Personaly I think there should be a class-action suit for false advertising.mad.gif
How do we start one? Any lawyers here?

this is probably a dumb question but how do you know if a port is intel or marvel? I have the extreme 3 gen 3 z68 board. All I see are two sata III ports. Thanks!

Read your mobo manual...anyways, you do not have any Marvell ports so you need not worry.
