[Build Log] hyu's Sandy Bridge-E Build!

Thread Starter
Greetings from Sydney, Australia guys!

I had been looking at the new Sandy Bridge-E chips quite extensively ever since they were announced so I was naturally very excited when they were released. I purchased my old i7-920 when it was first released so it was only natural for me to step into the SB-E chips for my new build as I figured it was time for an upgrade. This is going to be my first post on these forum so here goes!

Below contains a list of parts which I will (eventually) have in my new SB-E build. I'm really only missing the video cards, RAM and possibly a PSU. I used some parts from my old x58 machine like my PSU, CD drive and video card. For this build, I am aiming for a full ASUS + Corsair setup as these are by far my two favourite brands.
  • Intel i7-3930K - I plan on OC'ing this once I get my RAM. I'm aiming for 4.5GHz+
  • ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
  • ASUS GTX570 - from my previous build. Planning on upgrading to 2 x ASUS GTX 580 ROG Matrix cards in SLI
  • ASUS Xonar Essence STX
  • ASUS DVD-RW Drive
  • Corsair Dominator GT 16GB 2133MHz RAM (4 x 4GB) 9-9-9-24 - currently using some Corsair Dominator GT 2000MHz sticks which are missing their heatsinks (borrowed from a friend).
  • Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD - OS
  • Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD - Games (I only play CS:S and BF3) This was my old OS drive on my x58 machine.
  • Corsair Obsidian 800D
  • Corsair AX-850 - Used from my previous build. I may look at upgrading to the AX-1200 when I get my GTX580's.
  • Corsair Hydro H100
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB - for other games I barely play
  • Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB - for personal data (photos, music, etc.)
  • 2 x Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB - for movies, TV shows, etc.

Parts
397

Assembled
700

I'm not 100% happy with the temperatures with my H100 so I'm looking at replacing the fans with 4 x Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 1850RPM fans in a push/pull configuration and hook them up to a Lambtron FC fan controller to control the speeds. Summer in Sydney can be quite strange. E.g. right now we're getting tops of 20 degrees C for the beginning of summer!
140

If I'm still not happy with the temps then I will look at doing a custom water loop. The only reason I went with the H100 was due to laziness in all honesty smile.gif

I also know the Asus ROG Matrix cards are triple slot cards but their look really appeals to me and I feel it will fit into my build quite well.

What are people's opinions with the AX-1200? Is the AX-850 enough to run the 3930K @ 4.5, SLI'd GTX580's and 5 drives?

Because the bigger one is a Force GT which is higher spec'ed than the Force 3. Plus I only play very few games so 60GB is plenty smile.gif

Thanks! Getting about 30 degrees Celsius at load with the H100 fans on the low setting, room temperature around 19 degrees C.

I might consider doing a loop when my Dominator GT 2133MHz sticks arrive smile.gif
I don't really plan on going too extreme OC'ing it as I'm aiming for a steady 24/7 OC. I'll keep this thread updated though. Pretty difficult to find any Gentle Typhoon AP-15's in Australia frown.gif

Hey guys, bit of an update:

Managed to overclock the 3930K to 4.5GHz @ 1.32v. I'll post up a CPU-Z validation later on today after I tweak the RAM timings a bit. Anybody else loving the OC key that comes with the R4E? Tweaking live in Windows FTW.

Ran Prime95 overnight and temps didn't go above 70c degree's with the H100 fans set to low which is a bit high for my liking so I'm going to get the push/pull config running on the H100 ASAP.

I can't seem to find any Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1850rpm fans anywhere in Australia (they seem to be a popular fan) so I'm going to order 4 x Noiseblocker M12-P's instead which I know I can get. Will be pairing this with the Lambtron FC touch fan controller which I think will suit the 800D quite nicely.
