You're over complicating things, the key word there is some. Personally I don't consider a CPU model that sometimes in a blue moon and when the stars align in a certain way you get sent a CPU that has the potential to unlock. For the newer Phenom II X4s it appears that a select few have Thuban cores but you are much more likely to get one with a Deneb core. Personally who can keep track of all the crazy times AMD decides to send out a Thuban core instead of a Deneb core. With the 960T you are guaranteed to get one with a Thuban core, that's not to say it's guaranteed to unlock but at least you know it has the potential. The same can't be said for the 980BE or most of the Phenom II X4 chips.

If its true the 980 is a true quad core than I dont know. From what my understading was was that all Phenoms are the same chip just cores disabled. Yuksel does not agree though. He is saying what I thought to be true as well. Find me some proof if you can. If this is true then obviously go with the 960T but I would make sure that the 980 cannot be unlocked before you do that. Its your choice.

This. No better way to put it.

Even if the 980 COULD unlock, chances that the OP gets his hands on such a chip are 1:1000000000000000000000000000. AMD made as many as those chips as i have a chance of OCing a Pentium I to 8 Ghz. The 960T is, however, a surefire unlockable Thuban. Whether or not the cores are stable remains to be seen. It's the satisfaction of owning the bonus that counts. As Ben put it, let's not over-complicate things for the OP

Back in January 2009 AMD released the Phenom II X4 and it used the Deneb core (physically this is a quad-core). In April 2010 AMD released the Phenom II X6 which used the Thuban core (physically this is a hexa-core). Those are two facts. The majority of Phenom II X4s sold today still use the Deneb core. Just on occasion AMD decides to put a monkey wrench in things and send a Phenom II X4 with a Thuban core. The Phenom II X4 chips with a T at the end (such as 960T) are guaranteed to be Thuban cores but all other Phenom II chips use the Deneb core, besides the rare rare occasion when AMD makes one with a Thuban core. I don't really know how to give sources for this information because it's just stuff I've learned over the years.

heya guys biggrin.gif
Just an update, I grabbed the 960T, Just shoved it into my new rig and hit the unlock cores button... BAM 6 cores fully stable, without any overclocking im hiting superpi 1 million at 20 Seconds, and 32m at 20m 50s. Gonna start playing around seeing how high I can push it smile.gif Thanks for the great advice guys! smile.gif
