NEW system with OLD PSU /Ivy bridge compatibility concerns

Hello TO all of you who roam this wonderful forum.

I'd like your opinion on some issues that bothers me.

Here is the build I'm planning to get:

MoBo - ASUS S1155 Z68 DDR3 SATA6 USB3 BT ATX
CPU - Intel i7 2600k
GPU - Club 3d GTX 560ti
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X Performance - DDR3 1600 Mhz - 2 x 2GB
SSD - 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD
HDD - I'll take out from my old pc 500gb 7200 Rpm
PSU - Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 OR Chieftec 620w, Model CFT-620-A12S Which I had on my old pc.
OP - I already have Windows 7 from my old pc.
CASE - don't know, nothing to fancy . 60 dolars +-

This PC will be used for Gaming and Video editing. I am open for recommendations regarding any component.

Problems:

1) I am thinking on not buying a new PSU, but use the old one i had on my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4/q6600/8800gtx system which is "Chieftec 620w, Model CFT-620-A12S" for the sake of saving money.

Would it be enough for this system?

2) With the approach of Ivy Bridge processors I am not sure what mobo to take. I chose "ASUS S1155 Z68 DDR3 SATA6 USB3 BT ATX" because I read that it will be compatible with the new Ivy Bridge CPU's.

Maybe there is a better mobo that suports Ivy Bridge?

I do not want to wait for the new Ivy Bridge technology because I am currently on this system "Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4/q6600/8800gtx" and it gives me a lot of problems when I'm multitasking, editing HD video, gaming. So I would rather like to upgrade the cpu when the IVy bridge technology comes out.

I am from Latvia so our prices are a lot different from US. If you can suggest something better withing the boundaries of prices for these components I mentioned would be SUPER!!!

Hey mate, welcome to the forum

About the second question, you can pick pretty much any Asus motherboard and they will support Ivy Bridge and PCIe 3.0, list here:
436
312

In my opinion the PSU is good enough for the new build. Even OCed the new build won't consume more than 350W. You would require the 750W PSU only if you'd pick up 2-3x 560Ti, as it is 620W is more than enough. 8800GTX consumes much more than a 560Ti

Another idea would be to get more RAM. It's so cheap that at the very least you should get 2x4GB DDR3-1600. Also depending on the prices you can find the 6950 1GB can be a better choice as it's faster than the 560Ti.

good luck with the new build

I suggest following Intel's Tick-Tock method. For example you get a new architecture aka. Sandy Bridge(the tick) and the the die shrink, aka. Ivy Bridge(the tock). Id say you should wait for Ivy Bridge, and then buy the new die shrink processors on the upcoming platforms, instead of getting the brand new architecture when it first comes out. Implement the tock for a processor, and the tick for graphics cards and all other components. thumb.gif

Thank you dragosmp for response smile.gif

Those are all Asus mobos as I understand. Maybe there is one that stands out performance/money wise ?

About the PSU, I'm still not convinced. I've read other forums with similar discussions about the psu for 2600k etc, and the voltage range proposed there ranged from 450w to 1000.

It seemd like each of them had a totaly different opinion/understanding about the power consumption.

Hopefully I'll get some more input about this issue here.

Unfortunately, 4 months is a lot of time. I will have to get something faster.

That Tic Toc thing is a bit confusing.

I'd be happy to hear more opinions.

Specially about the PSU

Sorry for Bump.

I am still uncertain about using my old PSU.

Looking for guidance.

A 750w for that system would be fine and the 620 should also be fine unless your going to sli and overclock. As for the mobo most 1155 boards are ivy compatible due to the common socket. AsRock makes some great "bang for your buck" boards.

Thanks man.

Some uncertainty still roams my mind, but I feel a lot better about the PSU. smile.gif

I also decided to use my 4 years old case "CHIEFTEC MIDITOWER ATX BLACK/SILVER [CH-01B-B-SL-O]"
