Ergonomics - how do you guys manage?

Thread Starter
I'm experiencing wrist pain at my desk and getting carpal tunnel.

Any tips or equipment you guys use to mitigate these issues?

I've had carpal tunnel since I was 13. The only real relief is to have your keyboard and mouse as far away from you as possible, to keep the strain on your knuckles and wrists as low as possible. Keep the keyboard on the "low" mode without the kickstands. Most importantly, take frequent typing breaks. Take your hands off the keyboard. There's so many people who just leave their hands at idle on the keyboard while browsing around. Don't do that! Take them off the keyboard and put your hand(s) in your lap.

Also, if your chair reclines, use it. Scoot as far under your desk as you can and lean back all the way. Extend your arms with your keyboard as far away from you as it'll go (like mentioned before). This way you maintain the proper posture to stay comfortable and it'll keep your back straight so you don't get back pain. it also levels your shoulders with your arms so your arms/wrists will be less strained as well.

A height adjustable chair and a desk with a keyboard tray have done wonders for me. I tore a tendon in my right wrist back in 1997 trying to lift an enterprise APC battery backup unit into a server rack with the batteries still in it by myself like a dummy. The wrist has never been right since. Using those little trackpads and eraser nubs on laptops is murder for me now.

Lowering the keyboard on a retractable tray and raising my chair so that the keyboard and mouse are hovering just a little over my lap has helped immensely, plus I can push the tray back and forth to adjust the distance as necessary if I start feeling fatigue. It was a tough decision to skip PC upgrades for awhile and divert that money towards a nice desk and chair, but in hindsight it has been a great investment. The furniture has far outlasted any single computer I've ever built, and hasn't depreciated nearly as much over the last ten years either. thumb.gif
