Just a quick 1 guys,

I have got a Athlon XP 2600+ and wanted to know how to overclock it and also what sort of gain will i get from it.

Is it worth it or am i bbetter off just to upgrade the system.

Cheers

Hi V3X,

Your boards Manual Download Page:

http://download.asrock.com/manual/K7VM3.pdf

BIOS Download Page:

http://www.asrock.com/support/downlo...del=K7VM3#bios

I need some information. Do you know if your 2600+ is a Thoroughbred or Barton chip? If you don't know, download CPU-z and post the results. By the look of your DRAM I am thinking that you have a Thoroughbred processor on a 266MHz fsb.

There are three 2600+ XP's on the desktop.
  1. Athlon XP 2600+: Thoroughbred, 256KB L2, 2133MHz, 266MHz FSB
  2. Athlon XP 2600+: Thoroughbred/Thorton, 256KB L2, 2083MHz, 333MHz FSB
  3. Athlon XP 2600+: Barton, 512KB L2, 1917MHz, 333MHz FSB
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-136.zip

Here are the settings for your board and a Thoroughbred 2600+ (266fsb). Set your dram to 100 which allows you to overclock your processor and still keep the dram within specifications. You can test it for higher abilities once you have attained your best overclock.

If you have a Thoroughbred then you are running on a 266/2 = 133MHz FSB and have a 16 multiplier and a stock 2.1GHz speed. You do not have a PCI lock so you need to keep your PCI bus at no greater than 37MHz or stability issues will occur. Your PCI bus is normally at 33MHz so your ratio for stability is:

133:33 as X:37 ---> X - 4921/33 --> X ~= 150

This gives you a maximum FSB of ~150 and I would personally raise no higher than 145MHz. Your overclock would then be 16 X 145 ~= 2.3GHz. I don't think you will make this height and you should start your testing at 140 X 16 ~= 2.24GHz. If your temperatures while prime testing (full load) are lower than 55C then you should be fine to raise and retest.

Hi Ropey

I believe mine is a Athlon XP 2600+: Thoroughbred, 256KB L2, 2133MHz, 266MHz FSB

I will check it out when i get home, but by the sound of things i am better off gettin a newer processor,

cheers for the links and info.

Don't condem the system just yet.

The RAM and the VIA chipset will limit your overclock...but you should be able to raise it up to around the 140-145MHz range on the fsb.
Just watch the PCI and AGP clocks as you have no lock on them, try to stick to 33/66MHz for these to remian stable.

The only other way to get more from the CPU would be an upgrade of the motherboard to one with a nf2 chipset the (nf2 Ultra 400) being the best option and some PC3200 (DDR400 RAM).
Unlock the CPU and away you go.

Be it the Tbred, I've done the DT version @ 166FSB with good sucess, that PC was sold off some time ago and is still gaming today. Considering it has unlocked multiplyers and the Tbred XPM 2600+ has a 16x, you have plenty of multiplyer to work with. Utilizing a "standard" or near standard FSB will keep the PCI/AGP in check since you have a VIA chip set.
Even though it's an XP-M, cooling will still be a concern since you have a stock HSF. When upping the vcore, do keep the full load temp below 55c.

I have a 2600 Barton and was only able to get it to 2.3 but went to 2.2 because i got better performance. I think it was because of my ram holding me back. can't get you the oc info because i just switched mobo out and added my 939dual-vsta and 3700+. but i am posative that it went to 2.3 without crashing. 3dmark gave me better scores with a 2.2
