Motherboard is bent! - Page 2

Maybe some folded cardboard under the board to stiffen and cushion.... I think that would be a safe bet due to paper's cumbustion temp is 454 degree's farenheit (if I remember correctly)

Alternativly you could try a heat gun to bend it back into place.... (or a hair dryer on high for a realy long time)

Weight and heat from your heatsink and use probably had little or nothing to do with it. Virtually no board I have ever used, no matter how hot or how long it was operated, failed to return to virtually like new shape when the heatsink/mounting hardware was removed.
You have nothing to worry about from using a heavier heatsink. There are none massive enough to damage, or even permanently warp, the overwhelming majority of boards.

I too have owned many dozens of mostly high end expensive boards and each one, except two, were warped to some degree on each axis. It's funny because that's the first thing I check is if the damn board is straight!
I still have the two that are dead straight on each edge, an Asus Sabertooth P67 and an Intel DP67BG. I will give Gigabyte credit as most of thier boards I've owned are very close to straight.

I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture or not, but there are circuit pads located directly under the NB heatsink that are attached to the mobo, which were at one point connected to the heatsink as well. The pads show signs of tearing as I alluded to in my previous post. Since the board bent, and the heatsink is only physically attached to the mobo by two pins, the circuit pads separated from the heatsink due to the force resulting from the concave dip. Meanwhile, the heatsink remains perfectly straight. This is what caused the pads to tear and therefore we can conclude that the board was once straight.

This is incorrect. For example, if you're familiar with pre-slim xbox models you would know that the motherboard would often bend due to the stress placed on it from excessive weight and heat. The bending of the motherboard is the direct cause of the infamous RROD(Red Ring of Death). Weight + Heat + Gravity = Bending Motherboard. To fix the issue one would have to reheat the mobo, in order to restraighten it, while applying the Xclamp fix. This basically adds support beneath the mobo where pressure from component weight is at its peak.

So, no this can most definitely happen, and my motherboard, along with many other instances, are direct proof of just that.

That's exactly what I will do. I'll stack several layers and make a cardboard template placing it beneath the bend. Thanks. Very good idea!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the board. All motherboards are designed to have some flexibility for mounting coolers, there is nothing to worry about. I've built numerous systems that have the same bend and sometimes worse and all work 100%.

The XBox comparison is not a good one. Early models got extremely hot (120C or more) and being cheaply mass produced were only four layer boards. It's highly unlikely your board ever got so hot, for anywhere near as long, and is probably 6-8 layers thick.

As for the torn thermal pads, this implies nothing. Thermal pads are fragile, and they could easily have torn long before the board was ever used, simply by the heatsink being installed and lifting off due to the curve at the factory.

There is nothing at all about your situation that implies this board has not been warped since it was manufactured. You could still bend it the other way by jamming a shim underneath it as Murphy has suggested.

there is no back plate on the stock cooler. therefore, it will bend your board as is seen in OP's pics.

but it really does not matter at all if the board is still operational. Its not a piece of glass or something, its still made of copper traces....

and brand new boards are always straight.

If you want to totally ignore several people who have vastly more experience than yourself on the subject and draw your erroneous conclusions from one single board sample, that was probably bent from the day they pressed out the PCB at the factory, I cannot stop you.

Most coolers, even with backplates, will bend a motherboard's PCB if compression is high enough, or the back plate itself is not flat (and not all are).

My cheap MA770T is quite flexible and has a much cheaper/lower gauge backplate and is bent to a degree that is almost worrying by the TRUE that is mounted to it. Still, even with such a large bend, it will return to normal if I remove the cooler.

My current sig board is 12 layers and quite stiff, it's still noticeably bowed by my Prolimatech Genesis, backplate and all. However, the second I remove the cooler, the board will go back to normal, despite having thousands of hours of 80-90C CPU and ~70C VRM temps in the area of the socket.

Same can be said for most other boards I've used. They will return to the shape they were originally in when any heatsinks are removed. A stock cooler and anything remotely like normal use will not permanently warp a board.

You are flatly wrong and you are perpetuating potentially dangerous misinformation.

At least half of the boards I've ever owned, and more than half the boards in my current possession, came with some level of bend, or warping, usually near the CPU socket.

Actually the only board I've got at my current residence that is really flat is my P6TD Deluxe. I don't think I've ever had a Gigabyte or DFI board that was flat, and most other brands, in my experience, are really hit or miss.

It's not that bad but if you have a metal backplate on the CPU I'd suggest you put some ESD like plastic tape or electric tape that doens't smudge with heat.
