Are all of these motherboards future proof? The main ones I'm looking at is the Asus Crosshair V formula and the Gigabyte GA-990FXA.

I will most likely prefer the cheaper one but I'm not quite sure if it is worth spending that extra bit of money?

Also with the gigabyte one there is a UD3 and UD5 version of the motherboard is there much difference between them?

There are minor differences. The UD5 has a heatpipe leading from VRMs to the NB. UD3 doesn't have any heatpipes.

UD3 supports 2 Way CF/SLI
UD5 supports 3 Way CF/SLI

All of them are AM3+ so yeah, relatively future-proof thumb.gif

Is it worth spending that extra bit of money on the UD5?

I got a couple of mhz short of 4.2ghz out of my C3 945 as a daily overclock, though the massively abused cpu-nb frequency made a helluva lot more difference than just the overclocked cpu frequencies as it helps with decreasing RAM latencies too.

It means running 3 AMD/Nvidia cards together. For eg, 3x6950's in threeway-Crossfire.
