Anyway these negative pots about skyrim are the reason I cannot decide on getting it for pc or xbox. if you spend 60 bucks and it runs like crap then you're screwed at least if you dont like it on 360 you can return it to gamestop, or i can rent it from gamefly. decisions declensions...

My rig RUNS the game just fine...until it BSOD's about every 10 minutes.
It's just horribly optimized. As are ALL Bethesda games.
All they seem to care about is console sales and DLC.
Everything else is left to the modding community to figure out and fix.

To be honest, that's not a "verrrrry nice gaming pc." You have a mid range graphics card, and only a single one.

You should probably need to overclock your CPU quite a bit if you haven't already, Graphics card too and you might get some better results.

The game does have issues - search the web and try out some of the mods/ini changes to help alleviate some of the issues. You're not the only one having them. Once you have ruled out everything, try running the game again.

Yes both cards scale down, and in SLI the memory is mirrored so you only have 1 GB VRAM available,

SLI will initially lock the core clock to the lower card (Core and Memory) Overclocking using afterburner or any other OC app will affect both cards

It runs great on my system, i got that 4gb mod though and other mods (makes the game load slighty slower but i don't mind much), still using just 1.5gb when playing but i get a constant 60fps, maybe 45-50 in towns but i haven't had any crashes or BSOD.

Everyone I've talked to (except one member on here named Dustin) gets this exact same issue in certain locations, looking in certain directions.

Check out this thread, where I talk about it at length, including some of the exact spots where I see the problem (most of the 2nd half of the thread is me and Dustin discussing the problem).

There's also this thread and this thread and ... literally dozens of others you can find by googling 'low gpu usage skyrim', where you'll see countless others on dozens of PC forums describing the exact same problem.

Also, OP, the way Afterburner works (by default ... you can change this behavior in the settings) is that it syncs both cards automatically in terms of clocks and voltage. It will see one of the two cards as the 'primary' card (usually it's the one on top on your board), and set both cards clocks and voltage to match that of the primary.

Sometimes this default behavior is bad, because your cards may not have the same 'stock VID', i.e. the voltage they set at the factory that they determined was appropriate for that particular chip. If the 'primary' card has a stock VID of 1.025V, and the 2ndary is 1.068V (just pulling out random numbers), by default AB will set both cards to 1.025V, which could cause the 2ndary card to become unstable. In this case, you want to turn off the 'synchronization of similar cards' feature of AB, so you can adjust volts/clocks on each card separately.

Note that two cards in SLI can be run at different clocks, however, what ends up happening is that the 'faster' card just 'waits' for the slower card (i.e. it will end up with slightly lower GPU usage), and your performance will end up being the same as it would if you had both cards clocked to that of the 'slower' card.

(EDIT: As a side note, Bababooey, it's great that Skyrim runs so, so good on your system, but this game DOES HAVE A PROBLEM, and there's 1000's of people experiencing it, so knock it off w/your implications that nobody knows what they're doing, or what they're talking about. Your post has been held for moderation by a mod of this forum, btw ... they may restore it, or they may not.)

How low are these dips that you are talking about? Even in 3d I'm not dropping much under 30 fps very often. Dropping shadow quality to high can make a big difference. Does turning off MSAA help?

Most likely drivers. I am getting better performance on my stock-clocked GTS 250 then I was on my stock or overclocked 5850.

As you can see from the first link I posted, my cards drop from a constant 60fps to around 36-40fps in certain spots of the more populous towns, with GPU usage in the 50-65% range. With one card disabled (i.e. not in SLI), I get around 2 fps less in the same spot (vs SLI) and usage only around 70%. And I've tried damn near everything to fix it ... including, of course, disabling the in-game AA. Dropping to 800x600 doesn't even change the FPS, nor the CPU load (although it makes the GPU usage go WAY down).

I've yet to try lowering shadow quality in the pre-game settings, but I've done all sorts of tweaks in the games .ini that affect shadows (as well as tried just running the default .ini) ... and none of those changes seem to affect the low FPS/low gpu usage issue in these spots in the game.

In short, it looks very much like a CPU bottleneck, but the strange thing is ... I get HIGHER overall cpu usage in areas where the FPS isn't jacked up in this way ... behavior which is definitely counter-intuitive if the situation is a CPU BN.

Awww hay-ell nah. On PC, for most people, there's certain spots in the game where FPS and GPU usage drops, but it only happens in certain spots in certain towns (i.e. non-combat) ... and frankly I'd not be shocked if it doesn't happen on xbox (at least) as well.

But it's in NO WAY a big enough problem that it makes PC into the inferior version of the game vs. on consoles. It looks SO SO SO much better on PC, and plus you can mod your game on PC ... so that's definitely the version I'd want thumb.gif

Edit: Pretty much every time you read a thread about Skyrim, there's somebody new asking why they're only getting 40fps in the game's cities when their GPU usage is only like 70%
