Skyrim on Ultra on verrrrry nice gaming pc, not working correctly??? - Page 6

For those of you who want better graphics, here are some really nice texture packs. And even a mod for enhanced shaders. Also to note, on my sig rig, all these texture packs, and the shaders installed get me no FPS drop at all, same FPS as I get without them.

Landscape retexture:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2146

Water retexture:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=711

General misc textures (2k textures):

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=607

Enhanced distant terrain:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1598

Enhanced night:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=85

Enchanced shaders:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=822

Weapon retextures:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1754

I used the Nexus mod manager to install all these, and if there are conflicting textures, it will let you choose which ones to use and which ones to dump.

ALSO

Those of you who have the bug for flickering shadows, this video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXgF_IDpFNI

It helps a bunch, but unfortunately doesn't eliminate the problem entirely.

Also another fix for shadows:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=148

Combining the above 2 helps, but the shadows in general SUCK in skyrim. And don't bother setting shadow detail to ultra, because with my sig rig that setting alone cuts my FPS in HALF.

Small example of how much better the graphics look with some of these texture packs:

I suggest you read my post more clearly. I get 60fps ALL THE TIME with my i7 950 gtx 480 SLi rig. If that's not "demolishing a game" then don't know what will. what I was talking about was my htpc/gaming rig which is also in my sig a phenom II 955 with a gtx 470. it plays it decently that I wonder why their pc's that are much higher end than my htpc is struggling while mine with an old am2+ board and ddr2 mems plays it really well.

I'm pretty sure I read your post clearly, it just wasn't entirely clear (not as clear as you wrote it just now wink.gif), esp. w/o also looking at the details of your sig, which I admittedly did not do.

If, in fact, what you say is true, and you DO get 60fps literally all the time, then it makes you a very special case ... so I humbly invite (and even urge thumb.gif) you to join us in our quest to determine 'what is different' for the very tiny sliver of people who don't get the huge FPS/usage dips in the large towns, for example like in Whiterun, overlooking the large tree in the center of town from the steps of the Jarls palace. We could really use another member who doesn't have the problem ... esp. someone who's not running SB + 500-series thumb.gif

Obviously, I have the issue, and your sig rig and mine's difference(s) are not enough to explain the discrepancy, and in fact there's people with even higher end systems than ours who drop to 40fps or so in the troublesome areas ... so we're trying to figure out what the 'secret' is amongst the few (now 2, counting you) who don't have the issue.

Be stoked if you joined us on the thread, J smile.gif

With my sig rig, I get dips in the 40s in town, and Markarth is the worst, I see dips in the low to mid 30s from some viewing angles. Its really odd I could be getting 60, move the mouse a tad to the right and it immediately drops to 35? Funny thing is that I don't get any stutter, and wouldn't even notice the drop if I couldn't see the FPS. I can't say I've ever seen FPS drops that dramatic just by moving the mouse cursor a tad to the right, in any game. Skyrim runs kinda weird, no doubt about it.

I've ran much more demanding games than skyrim and gotten better performance. I can run Witcher 2 maxed out + Uber sampling on and get 30-45 FPS with crossfire. 50-60fps without Uber sampling.

I actually did notice a dip in framrates when I overlooked that exact area in whiterun. But other then that I've had no issues since I turned down the shadows and boot from the 4gb mod
post #55 of 61
That 4gb mod does absolutely nothing to improve performance/FPS in any way for me. Possibly because I got 16GB of ram? I also didn't have much of an issue with CTDs as many people had before using the 4gb patch.

I don't know I play Skyrim in 3d vision at 1920x1080 with every setting except shadows maxed out with no aa which isn't that important in 3d anyways with some high res texture packs. I hardly ever dip below 30fps in 3d with those settings. I'm running 280.26 btw.

It's really weird how this game works fine for some and poorly for others

I run Skyrim in 3D 1080P and it runs as smooth as butter, it is basically rendering everything twice, I would say the problem is the OP's GPU configuration.

Try going to the spot I described, with your OSD turned on so you can see FPS and GPU usage. Then you'll almost certainly discover that it's not the OP's GPU configuration, but rather, a problem with the game, where FPS and GPU usage dramatically drop for no apparent reason (I've determined though that the underlying cause is a dramatic and sudden CPU bottleneck in certain troublesome areas of the game).

Even if the FPS doesn't drop badly enough that the game isn't still pretty smooth, you'll likely definitely notice it's not as smooth as most of the rest of the game when you go to this area. And this is just one spot where this issue manifests, there's many dozens more like it that you'll discover if you run w/an OSD on at all times, and have a keen eye for slowdowns, as many of us do wink.gif
