6950 Video Driver stops responding and has recovered. Help please

Thread Starter
Not sure if I should post this in this thread, but here goes.

I just put together a new build for a friend, and when we open up firefox, at random we get the Display Driver stopped Responding and Has Recovered message from the taskbar.

All drivers are up to date, and the only other issue that I can see that's related is that the Headphones icon would appear and disappear very rapidly. This isn't my screenshot, but its in the same location.

At first I thought I found the issue, and I thought it was an intermittent problem with the front audio to motherboard connection, and it was causing the video driver to crash somehow, and removing anything connected to the front audio seemed to make the problem go away. We restarted a couple times and loaded up wow, and didn't have any issues and thought that was the end of it.

I got a bsod pointing to the file: atimpag.sys, but that's the only info I have so far. I don't have the computer in front of me, but I can access it with Team Viewer.

Everything here is new except for the hard drive:
HAF 922
seagate barracuda 1.5tb
Biostar TP67B+ motherboard
Intel i7-2600k
xigmatek loki cpu cooler
g.skill ripjaw 2x4gb 9-9-9-24 1.5v
ati 6950 2gb
dvd rw

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd very much appreciate them. Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

This should solve it.

Go to Firefox/Youtube/FlashPlayer etc, right click on it to disable "hardware acceleration".

Would that also help with the video driver crashing in WoW?

I just talked to my friend, and it seems that the service pack 1 wasn't installed. Once her computer is fully updated I'll give it a try smile.gif

Only Happens if the card is not stable meaning 99% Hardware Wise. Happens if the overclock is not stable. If your is at stock try to lower it. If that help then you might want to RMA the card.

That should solve it because Flash Player is conflicting with Windows drivers.

Is flash player in the background when the browers aren't open?

I'll try it. Thanks.

Try it now.

To answer your question: GPU can not do both task at the same time. By disabling Flash Player "hardware acceleration", you assign this task to CPU. CPU is more than capable to perform such a simple task.

It might help to uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration when available" from the options menu.

So she turned off hardware acceleration on firefox, and it seems to be stable now. She can have wow and youtube in the background without crashes. So far so good.
