Fan Controller Ticking

Thread Starter
I just got in my NZXT Sentry Fan Controller (The mesh one not the Sentry 2). When I connect my Scythe Slipstream 1900rpm fans to it I get an annoying ticking noise. It doesn't happen at 40% (lowest setting) or 100%, but it does anywhere in between there. It also happens with other fans but it isn't as noticeable.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this? Maybe the Scythes don't like to be undervolted?

Its called back EMF if the sound is coming from the fans. The PWM controller must not be that great, or the diodes that prevent back emf are screwed

I would have never figured that out myself, that's why I come to OCN! Thanks +rep. None of the reviews I read mentioned a ticking noise so I'll order another and send this one back when the replacement gets here.

I got rid of my sentry 2 b/c the ticking annoyed me so much. It happened with my noctua fans (both 120 and 140mm) the stock CM fan from my case, and my AP14's.

I got annoyed and didn't bother sending it back to try another and just gave it to a friend who didn't care about the noise.

There's a pretty lengthy thread about it on the NZXT forums and last I looked at it, there wasn't really any hope the problem would be fixed ever.

Upgraded to a Lamptron FC5v2 and it's great, albeit double the price.
