Low budget upgrade from Pentium D 925.

Hi guys, Im new, and I hope you can help me out.

My current system:

Asus p5l-mx ( LGA775 socket for Intel® Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo / Pentium® D / )
Pentium D 925 3.0 Ghz
Geforce 9800GT 512mb
Codegen 400W Psu
DDR2 1x1gb pc2-5300 667mhz
DDR2 1x2gb pc2-6400 800mhz)
250GB HDD. (Going to buy a new one since current is failing/freezing randomly.)

Using windows 7.

I had 1 gb of ram for a very long time and just needed to get more because my studies involve working with Archicad, autocad and Photoshop, often to be ran simulatiously and I just couldnt suffer lag anymore.

However, after I installed those 2 gigs today, and opened the programs up to check the difference - there was none. Ive launched Black Prophecy (game) to check any visual difference and it still was unplayable. Autocad file that had alot of hatch in it still lags. Task manager showed my CPU working at 100% and my head began to boil.

That pentium D is really a pain in the ass, concidering i like playing games too.

Im very low on money so please give me advice what should i do:

1. I could try to get a used Core 2 Duo E6700 that is a best choice for my motherboard.
Bad thing is, i will never gonna find it in my country (Lithuania), and getting used one from USA would cost me alot for shipping+taxes/nerves since i guess theyre rare. Or wouldnt it? Some sold them for around 50$ + shipping shouldnt be more than 12 $?. Also, If i have a Pentium D CPU Fan, can i just replace the processor, or i need to buy a new specific fan for E6700? Concidering i will most likely not overclock it?

2. You could offer me a cheapest but still worth switching to motherboard + cpu setup.
According to Cpubenchmark website my best money/efficency choice would be

Intel Celeron E3400 @ 2.60GHz41.17$41.44*

3. I could try to overclock my current proc? (Dont think its a good idea.)

:?

You could try overclocking, but FYI you might not have seen a difference in performance because RAM generally needs to match in size and speed. Are you sure the RAM you added is even being recognized and run at its advertised speed?

Thanks for the reply.

Ive noticed difference in general stuff like browser and other programs, but not ingame. Its probably too dependant on the CPU. Gonna try new drivers.
Anyway ive red that my 2gb 800mhz ram would run at same speed as the lowest ram present in the system, in my case its pc5300 1gb, 667 mhz.

On asustek it says that motherboard supports: 2 x DIMM, Max. 4 GB, DDR2 667/533/400 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture

So as i understand i have 3gb that run at 667 which does not exceed the limit of the mobo so it should be fine comptability wise. smile.gif Checked it via CPUz and ram are recognized.

Any more thoughts on the CPU situation anyone?
