Core i7 920 Running too Hot on Stock / Slow PC

Thread Starter
Hello, I hope I posted in the right section, My issue is with my i7 920. I built my rig I would say about 1-2 years ago. Normally the pc ran fine, occasional slowdowns that never bothered me. However I decided to do some upgrades, and check heat etc.. and on the stock i7 cooler I get 60-100 degrees according to core temp, but most of time I get high 80s+. The only rig I have in my profile is the one I am experiencing issues with, but I will put the specs below so that you don't have to check.

I also notice ridiculously slow speeds. I am running windows 7 64-bit, every time I run a program it takes a long time to open, even to extract a 1 megabyte file with winrar it takes like 1 minute for winrar to open, before it would be instantly. I have ran malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy etc.. on safe mode, founds lots of issues but I deleted them.

I am looking for advice, all help appreciated.

Rig:

- Core i7 920
- 4gb Corsair XMS3 DDR Ram ( will upgrade to 12gb )
- Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
- Antec 902 case
- 1GB ATI XFX 5770
- Corsair 650w power supply

I agree, and I am looking for a good one. Any suggestions? I just took about about $120 to spend on the pc, hoping to get this $50 deal in 12gb ram kit, and the rest is hopefully enough for a great cpu cooler ( Cooling is the most important to me, after having a horrible experience with hp laptops ).

But.. do you think heat is whats making the computer INSANELY slow? I mean I am assuming it is something with the OS because in safe mode I don't get any lag

That is very very hot for idle temperature, even with a stock heatsink.

I am 99% sure that it is throttling itself back because of heat. Every time you run something that uses CPU, it heats up a bit, overheats, and as a result, it slows down to save your chip from dieing. How long has it been like this? I like to keep my i7 920s below 75c under MAX LOAD. Anything over 80c with these chips and you're asking for problems(death).

The stock heatsink is very capable of keeping your stock 920 at safe temperatures. Make sure the heatsink is mounted properly and that all the pins are pushed in the way they are supposed to.

Thanks for the responses, I am going to check and reseat everything because I am worried at the moment ( I don't have money to spend to buy new cpu etc.. and plus this is my only pc ). As for a virus, any utility you recommend other than malwarebytes and spybot?

Thanks!

This. your heat problems are NOT from a virus. unless your task manager is showin 100% constantly, it is likely just throttling because of the heat, making it seem sluggish. The real issue is likely that the cooler is not mounted completely or may be loose even slightly, because if it is not flat, it wont be making enough contact to cool it at all.

How dusty is the stock cooler? Are all the pushpins snapped into place?
