Core i7 920 Running too Hot on Stock / Slow PC - Page 2

Thanks for the tips. Yea I am aware that heat is definitely not caused by a virus, so I am going to buy a new cooler. However the slowdowns may be virus or I am lost on what it could be. I took apart EVERYTHING, even the top of the antec 902 to clean it, I noticed 1 of the 4 pushup pins was not properly in place ( go figure ), I will report if the heat goes down.

I figured one wasn't all the way down. I had the same issue when I had an i7 950 and was seeing 90+ in Prime 95.

The slowdowns you were feeling could very well be the processor hitting the thermal threshold where it slows everything down to keep from causing long term damage.

Hmm I was able to lower down the temperature to 50-55 degrees, though all I am doing is using Firefox.

Also I only have dual channel because I don't have a triple channel kit, however I am getting one this week hopefully. Same goes for a new cpu cooler.

That being said if you know of any good deals please post.

Triple channel doesn't make a difference. I ran my i7 950 with dual channel for like 4 months and then got a triple kit and my benchmark scores didn't even change.

If you are looking for a CPU cooler, get a cooler master hyper 212+ or hyper 212 EVO. They are cheap, easy to install, and can compete with coolers over double their price.

I personally have the 212 EVO, and it keeps my q9450 at < 45c load @ 3.52 GHz thumb.gif

Instead of Hyper212+/Evo opt for v6gt, a bit costlier, but of superior performance than hyper series.

I would suggest finding out what is wrong with your current configuration before running out to buy new parts that may or may not solve the issue or that you may repeat the same mistakes, if any, with. The stock cooler is not very good, we know this, but it should be more than capable of keeping the CPU below the point PROCHOT (thermal throttling) would be triggered, even under heavy load.

It's very probable that the cooler is dirty; the fan is dying or fan speed not configured properly in the BIOS; is just plain mounted incorrectly, or has become that way.

So yeah, my recommendation is to fix what you've got, then if you are still not content, get a new cooler.

I am wondering if just using Firefox with the stock cooler, 50ish degrees is normal.

Again thanks for the tips.

EDIT: I would like to point out that upon installing my Cooler Master 212+ CPU Cooler, my temps dropped all the way down to 30-40 degrees C.

However I do still get random lag. Must be software related.
