EasyC, can you check your SkyrimPrefs.ini for the bFloatPointRenderTarget setting? It should be set to 1 in Dustin's ini. Your GPU usage should at least be higher while looking at the tree, if the setting is on.

I wish I had done some testing before either patch, it ran much better then.

The others covered how to start it, but just to clarify, was it working at one point and now it is not? If so, are you running an FXAA injector? That requires a workaround.

Oh yeah, and I've played some more with HT! And yeah, IDK what was going on when it seemed I got more fps with it off. Because now HT on or off , makes no difference headscratch.gif

Dustin, any chance we could get you to retest w/no mods whatsoever, just so we can rule in/out some effect from the Mods? Given the other things we've so far pretty successfully ruled out, if it's not an effect of the mods you've installed, then frankly I'm utterly baffled as to what else it could possibly come down to headscratch.gif

Also, are you going to go ahead and let your game update to 1.02 anytime soon? I can see why you'd be hesitant to, and I'm not trying to talk you into it if you don't wanna, but it would be really handy for the sake of Science if we could see how your machine does when you're on the same version of the game as the rest of us thumb.gif

And could you let us know for positive what drivers you're actually running by looking at device manager? As I've mentioned, the fact that you have Ambient Occlusion available in NVCP suggests to me that you're actually on the 290-series drivers.

Everyone else:
Is anyone else rocking an older version of the game like Dustin, where you never let it update?

I'm getting massive performance differences when playing around with my GPU's power settings. Around a 10FPS boost and the game is running silky smooth now.
Doesn't the MSI Lightning 580 bypass NVIDIA's power limiting? Could something like that be in play here? I know that the latest AMD/NVIDIA cards throttle themselves during furmark.

Which power settings are you referring to? As for the throttling, that only happened at very high loads (loads only synthetic benchmarks like Furmark could produce) to prevent damage; I haven't heard of any games setting it off.

With AMD its called the 'power control settings' and its under the overdrive tab in the CCC. I use and have used an OC of 950mhz since I got the card, and I left the power setting on its default 0, bringing it up to 15 gave me a 10FPS increase in Skyrim, while bringing it up to 18 made me unstable unless I applied more voltage to the card, framerate didn't increase further, but GPU usage may have decreased(didn't check), I'm clearly hitting a CPU/RAM bottleneck at this point, my game averages 30FPS now, dropping to 25FPS at trouble spots.

So, I play Skyrim on my spare "gaming" computer at my friends house and Skyrim lags sometimes @ 1440x900 with all Low settings. It has a Pentium 4 3GHz/1M/800 2GB 667 RAM, and a 8800 GT OC. You'd think the P4 would be the bottleneck but it never goes above 90% usage, is the RAM the bottleneck? (the 8800 never sees higher than 20% usage) Even though the P4 isn't hitting 100% usage it's most likely the bottleneck right? tongue.gif

Although you're playing at very different settings on a very different setup than the rest of us, I'd say that there's a very reasonable possibility of that your old-school CPU is hanging you up, esp. in the larger towns like where I took my screenshots in the 2nd post, where some of us w/very powerful CPU's have very noticeable ones.

In fact, if you read through my whole 2nd post on this thread, you'll see pretty good evidence for why I always tell people that CPU usage means very little when it comes to assessing a CPU BN (or lack thereof). Bottom-line It's extremely possible to have one with only 90% CPU usage ... in fact, I'd even call it likely. Fact is, Skyrim REALLY doesn't run good on single cores ... you really kinda need two for this game.

If your 8800GT is only seeing 20% usage, you might as well increase your gfx settings ... I've run Skyrim on my 8800GT w/most of the settings on High. Although I was also rocking an 939-socket A64 dualie at 2.4GHz, which should be notably faster than your P4 on this game.

That's what I thought....I just thought it was strange cause my old E8400 could play Crysis 2 @ almost max, and it was ALWAYS pegged at 100% usage but it never lagged. I turned off HT and that made it worse...I'll have to try upping the graphic settings and see if that does anything lol. But like I said, that is just my side computer at my friends house, it's not my main rig haha
