2500k OC question

Thread Starter
So I built a new rig and have been trying to overclock it without much success. I followed this guide http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/01/07/how-to-overclock-the-intel-core-i5-2500k/4 and looked around these forums and followed other guides and my pc just crashes with all the settings told to put in.

MainboardCPUZ.jpg
2500kCPUZ.jpg

However, if I follow the guide in my link and just leave all my VOLTAGES to AUTO (instead of putting in the ones they tell me) my pc runs @ 4.5GHz without issues.

According to CPUz my core voltage @ 4.5GHz is only 1.056v which from reading guides is extremely low and would be considered good. I have yet to run prime95 to test for stability.

Current settings:
Load-Line calibration ENABLED
Real Time ratio changes in OS ENABLED
Turbo Boost Technology DISABLED
CPU PLL Overvoltage ENABLED
CIE DISABLED
C3\C6 DISABLED
CPU Thermal Monitor DISABLED
EIST Function DISABLED
HPET 64BIT

Core Multiplier x45
VCORE AUTO (currently 1.056v)
System Agent (vccsa) AUTO
QPI/VTT (vccio) AUTO
PLL Overvoltage AUTO (1.8v)

According to the guide I was supposed to use 1.3-5v for vcore, vccsa 1.135v, vccio 1.12v, and cpu pll of 1.9v but my pc would just crash every time. Did I miss something that I am doing wrong? Assuming this passes a prime95 stress test should I just leave it alone?

Current build in RIG.

wow, I don't know what's going on, your voltages are at auto but it gives you 1.056v at 4.5GHz? something's not right there

Ya, it's extremely low. I have no idea what's wrong frown.gif

i'd say CPU-Z is buggy, but i've never seen that at all. checked mine since I have a similar OC and specs and I am at 1.28V @ 4.45ghz

I'm just having a ton of trouble with this build that I've never had before.

When I OC at all my pc crashes.

When I run my SSD in caching mode my pc crashes (sometimes not).

When I take out my SSD drive, set my sata to IDE, and try not to OC my new build runes beautifully.

I just want to try to get SSD caching and a moderate OC to work damn it lol.

what kind of SSD? if OCZ make sure you update firmware...

also check to make sure Intel Rapid Storage is updated... I personally don't use SSD Caching, just use an SSD boot + 1TB storage drive, have you considered that kind of solution?

It's an OCZ Vertex3 with the latest firmware (2.15), raid enabled, latest irst drivers (10.8.xxxxx) and it's only60gb. I initially used it as my boot drive but after the installation, updates, and 3 games I had no space left.

wow i'm jelly.

Enable thermal monitoring.

You definitely have to test it for stability.
Do it in auto first. Then match the voltages set by the auto and drop them.
I BSOD in a minute running Custom 1344 using 6120mb RAM @ 4.5Ghz and auto voltages.

And if it works fine maybe enable turbo and all that stuff and run the test again.

Alright after playing with this things for 3 days I think I have all the kinks ironed out. I made the SSD my boot drive and everything is working great. Just going to put my main apps like office suite on there and maybe SC2 while the rest goes on my data drive. I have this thing OCd to 4.5ghz stable @ 1.35v hitting temps of 37-43c IDLE and 70-76c LOAD under prime95 for an hour. My cooler on here isn't great but I have a 212+ lying around in the box and that should help lower the temps a bit.

As far as the crashing problems I was experience earlier I think it had to do with my SATA settings. I decided to put everything to stock except for my sata which was set to AHCI and my computer would still crash. After setting it to IDE everything booted. I then tried overclocking again and it didn't crash! I then set it to AHCI again and boom crash. And yes when I installed windows my sata setting was achi and not IDE so I have no idea why I can install the OS with AHCI enabled but after 1 restart it crashes. Sounds like a driver issue but I installed all the newest firmware for my bios, HDDs, and sata controllers and still had the problem.

I think all my problems stemmed from setting my mechanical sata HDD to AHCI instead of IDE. I know AHCI is supposed to work but my HDD just doesn't like that setting.

Here are my settings now:
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB: AHCI (MAIN BOOT) Marvel Controller 6 gb/s
Seagate 1TB Mech: IDE (DATA STORAGE) Intel Controller 3 gb/s - with this set to AHCI my computer crashes or my drive is not recognized in bios or the OS.

OC Settings:
Multi: x45
vcore: 1.35v
VCCSA: 1.135v
VCCIO: 1.12v
PLL: 1.8v (auto)

Real-time changes in OS: enabled
Turbo Boost Tech: Disabled
CIE: Disabled
C3\C6: Disabled
Thermal Monitor: Disabled
EIST Function: Disabled
Multi Steps load-line: Level 4 (it goes from level 1 to 10, from reviews 4 was a good starting point). Does anyone know what this setting actually does?

HPET: Enabled
HPET: 64-bit

ya that's a bit odd, mine runs 4.6@1.4011v max on auto. But no matter what I try It will not boot over that, tried and gave up(4.6 is good enough until ivybridge). It may be a OK chip, not a great overclocker. Good luck, keep us informed.
