These AA mods cause the game to look blury in general in order to hide the bad edges.

(I always like to make several saves and then take them in batches at those exact points to get exact replica screenshots)

I might post up a few of my own later, but I'm a bit busy right now.

Did you see my pics?
Anyway, if you want to get exact before/after shots:
1) Run fraps and steam overlay at the same time.
2) Set fraps to take screenshots when F12 key is pressed.
3) Start your game and press F12.
You will get a before shot from steam and an after shot from fraps, at the same time.

You can honestly look at my borderlands screens and tell me the filter made the WHOLE image blurry? Yes the text is slightly warped, But it's very readable and the problem gets even smaller as resolutions go up. These post processing filters are better than MSAA in some cases, such as shimmering and leaves/fences.

Eh, I like the built in FXAA in Skyrim better from what I have tried so far. This new one looks better in screens but in motion I prefer FXAA, not sure why exactly but something is different when in motion.

I find MSAA at 4x (even taking the performance hit) is far better looking than FXAA or SMAA or MLAA... frown.gif

Of course it will look better. It's black and white in comparison.

Well sure! tongue.gif But what I'm getting at is I don't see the relative need to add this or FXAA to my games because the improvement isn't noticeable enough to make it worth using. Well, at least for BF3, it was so incredibly lackluster in terms of cleaning up jaggies I don't see the hype over it. Perhaps it has much more pleasant results in other games. redface.gif

I agree with you. This is by no means a replacement for real MSAA. That said this SMAA is in its early stages. There are new versions in the works with some increased functionality. So that could change things, but I have my doubts.

That said since this doesn't have that annoying blurring from what I've seen it is a good replacement for transparency anti-aliasing which usually causes a decent performance hit and is pretty much no longer supported by AMD. In combination with MSAA I think that SMAA could really shine or when you can't afford the performance hit of MSAA or where MSAA isn't supported at all. I still wouldn't happily use this as an MSAA replacement.
