Questions from a BOINC noob

Thread Starter
I installed the BOINC software and staterd runnning SETI but I noticed a few things that got me worried. Im not sure if the servers are down but my 2600k in not doing any work and all I see on my Transfers tab is "retry in 7:30 minutes and (project backoff 2:20:30)". Not sure what this means. Also my Task tab only shows a few Cuda jobs but no cpu ones. Is it supposed to download stuff automatic? Im trying to get this up and running for your Dec event. Ill check again when I get back from work. Thx in advance for any help.

Edit: I also noticed that my GTX 465 gets around 85% usage. It shows .30 cpu+gpu usage. Is all that stuff normal for BOINC?

Seti@Home has that problem a lot.

When you go to the transfers tab ""retry in 7:30 minutes and (project backoff 2:20:30)" means that your BOINC manager lost or did not get a connection to the Seti@Home server and will try again in 7:30 minutes. You will want to manually retry by selecting the task(s) that are refusing to download and click on the "Retry Now" button.

" Also my Task tab only shows a few Cuda jobs but no cpu ones."

This could be due to one the following:

-You went to the Seti@Home project page and selected to ONLY run Nvidia GPU tasks

-There are no CPU tasks available to crunch at the current time.

" I also noticed that my GTX 465 gets around 85% usage. It shows .30 cpu+gpu usage. Is all that stuff normal for BOINC?"

That is considered normal for BOINC. Some projects utilize the GPU better than others and use less/more CPU in the process.

Can I select a second project to work on and share the cpu resources so my cpu just dont sit there waiting for jobs? Maybe do 4 threads for 1 project and 4 for another and if is possible use all 8 when 1 project has no work. Is that possible with BOINC? Thx for the replies guys. I blame zodac for not teaching me anything about BOINC. biggrin.gif

you're blaming zodac for something?? I can no longer assist you, as I fear the zodac may be lurking now and I don't wish to be caught in the middle... lachen.gif

*turns on zodac detector*

zodac detector: zodac not detected.

Looks like we're safe :)

BOINC will use whatever free resources you have available, so you can attach as many projects as you want to it :)

Yep, you can sign up for several projects. World Community Grid has almost entirely got CPU only projects.
I run WCG on my CPU and share my GPUs between Primegrid and Seti@Home. This keeps my machine nicely busy the whole time.

You can theoretically setup the project usage by percentages, but it only kind of works.
