Hello again Sean.

I had a question for you: should I worry about heat for SSDs? I recently swapped out my mechanical drive for an SSD in my laptop, and I always figured the hot patch around the harddrive was from the harddrive, but it still feels just as hot. Should I worry about it?

Thanks in advance. cool.gif

Hey Sean I'm back again. biggrin.gif

Is there any proof of drive or performance degradation in raid 0? I just bought a 128gb m4. Really wanted a 256gb but couldn't afford it. My plan is to raid a second one down the road a bit. I know a lot of people here run their's in raid.

Just curious if all the stuff people say is overhyped. Or is it still bad to run them without trim?

Is there some technology breakthrough on the horizon I'm misssing? ... As QUALITY SSD's are now $1/GB or less at least in the 128GB class ...
Check this out ... I bet this Newegg "SHELL SHOCKER" deal for what seems to be the most popular SSD out there could go for less than $100! smile.gif
Rarely does Newegg put such a popular item into "Shell Shocker" status to dump inventory unless there is a major change on the horizon rolleyes.gif
Will it go for less than $100? ... We'll find out @ 1pm Pacific ... Bet it instantly sells out?

New OCZ Firmware Boosts Vertex 4 Performance Up to 210%: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ocz-vertex-4-firmware-upgrade-ssd,15550.html

hmmm...kinda makes me wish I got a Vertex 4....kinda...still don't fully trust OCZ QA/customer service...

EDIT: Actually I think Vertex 4 had a very low sequential read/write...so it should now be on par with others.

Hey

I'm taking my 120GB Vertex3 back to the store to have it replaced, it's been giving me nightmares for months now.

I'm currently stuck between choosing the 128GB Samsung 830 or the Corsair Performance Pro. I can get the 830 for €155 and the PP for €170. I'm currently leaning more towards the 830, but I was wondering about the firmware situation on both these drive.

Samsung offers a firmware on their website which was released in January, nothing new has been released since. Corsair on the other hand hasn't released any new firmware yet, so I can't really compare it. As for the updating procedure itself, it's a nightmare to do on the Vertex3, Samsung seems to be a bit better about that, but what about Corsair? If they do end up releasing an updated firmware, would it be easy to install?

Second thing I'm facing is my old Vertex3, before returning it to the store I'd very much like to erase it. Now, I've been reading Sean's guide on how to erase it with Parted Magic, but I'm wondering how effective this is? Will it actually make everything unrecoverable like a nice long run of DBAN would on a classic HDD?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like 256gb M4 is back around $250 range...maybe due to low supply.

EDIT: Found 128gb for $99!! Whoa: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crucial-M4-CT128M4SSD2-2-5-128GB-SATA-III-MLC-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-/290707134441?afepn=5335869999&campid=5335869999&PID=1225267

Yea economics 101 supply and demand.

I saw so many comments on the 256GB M4 "at this rate, I'll just wait a few weeks when it is $150".. but I had a feeling they'd be feeling pretty stupid in a couple days (which they are now).

What they didn't understand is that when everyone sells out, supply is down, and demand is up. When demand is up prices go up. Prices will not continue to plummet and those that waited got burned.

Now Amazon is backup to $250 for the drive and I'm willing to bet Newegg will be sold out for a while and/or will increase price on restock.

If they can sell out in 2 days at $199, why in the world would they restock it at $150? It's not happening.

But kudos on the 128 GB find!

They phasing the M4 supply out soon for the next gen stuff?
