Gaming with AMD FTW !! - Page 3

I think people are just over-exagerating things a LOT lately... Example:

I had a i3 530 overclocked to 4.0ghz, and recently moved to an i7 870 that I have kept at stock because im too busy to get a stable overclock, and just need a reliable computer right now.

I kept seeing people saying i3s couldnt game worth a shiz, and i thought they were crazy, paired with an overclocked 470 I couldn't find a game that I couldn't run with fairly high FPS @ 1080p; such as BF3, which maxes out my OCd 470, but the i3 was at a nice ~80% usage, not anywhere near bottle-necked. Moving to the i7, usage has only moved down to 60%, and frames have stayed the same, obviously the 470 is maxed out, and to get a performance boost I would need to upgrade that, But the point is, the i3 had NO PROBLEMS, even though people see it as a low end cpu that cant do anything with gaming.

EDIT: I know the above is a comparison within Intel CPUs, but the point is, there is a difference between what people NEED for good performance, and what they THINK they need for that same performance.

Besides that, I had bought the i7 at microcenter for an extremely reasonable $230. I also bought a Phenom II x4 830 (for $50!!!) for a home server that I was building. After testing them out to see that they worked, I ran LinX and IBT and found out that both CPUs, AT STOCK, managed around 40GFLoPs. (40 for the 830, got around 45 for the i7). So I seem to have "wasted" around $180 for an extra 5GFLoPs at stock speeds. But the point is, that they each have their purpose. the 830 runs SO much cooler than the i7 at stock speeds on an H50, the temp difference between idle and load is like 15C, maxing around 38-40C. which is AWESOME for a home server for minecraft, streaming movies to my PS3, and backing up files. I bought the i7 because I wanted an upgrade, and didnt want to switch platforms, since I do like intel (dad works for ASM as a Chief Engineer, so kinda want to be on his side rolleyes.gifbiggrin.gif)

If I were to build a computer that could do gaming but that was its main point, there would be NO reason to buy the i7 over the phenom, when the performance difference (inb4 "moar cores"/HT helps?) wouldnt really be noticeable. Some people want to buy things just to be maxing everything out, and they will buy what they buy, but honestly for the price, AMD has some AWESOME solutions. Cant speak much for BD stuff, but while helping build computers for my friends, I have gotten them Athlon II dual cores and they have NEVER complained that games dont work correctly paired with nVidia 465 and a 280.

Sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to point out that people need to chill out, buy what they want to buy while being informed, and be truthful to others when they ask them what they NEED, rather than bash and try to start arguments and fights.

Coming from someone who owns both, but is mainly an Intel fan (NOT a fanboy tongue.gif ) I like this thread. thumb.gif

I think that they might just be annoyed that people think that gaming CANT be done with AMD, which they are trying to disprove. I think all the sides AMD/ATI/nVidia/Intel need to just get along.

Ok i'll try setting things straight before another thread bites the dust in flames. AMD had built a lot of hype around BD followed by constant delays and was the most anticipated product after vending machines. However, it would be prejudice to say that BD fell flat on it's face because that wasn't the case at all. It just never lived up to the hype as a consumer desktop-oriented product, that's all. It really shined in multi-threaded apps, outpacing even the 2600K in some cases. Thus it was best suited as a server chip which it originally should have been marketed as. BD was never a bad product, not by a long shot, it just never lived up to the hype that AMD built around it, not so far at least. Things have only begun to pick up for BD by way of BIOS updates and scheduler service packs. The architecture shows a lot of promise and i believe good things are yet to come in the form of better revisions. However, as many may not like to admit this, Intel DOES take the crown in this round of the "war". This victory comes as a consumer-desktop product, not server-based. Many have said that rather than hardware shortcomings, BD faces software conflicts as the unique module architecture is not taken advantage of, as a result of a lack in necessary scheduler instructions. AMD claims that Windows 8 would see BD soaring to new heights with new revisions thrown into the mix. This, however, is just speculation and we can do nothing but hope that the architecture shows promise for the future. As far as the current scenario goes, while BD is a competitive product, it wasn't worth all the hype and delays. With regard to Windows 8 making things better? Only time will tell.

OP, I mean no offense(I'm an AMD guy all the way) but a thread of this nature is just asking for another flame war. While it was fun at first, It's now become stale and pointless. We've all grown up since then, matured and accepted facts. I, along with everybody else, should see you doing the same.

This site shouldn't be about people trumpeting their own opinions as truth and using very one sided information to put their case forward. These sorts of threads are beyond childish and only incite flaming and trolling. I'm sorry but this thread should be closed as it doesn't meet with the sites TOS.

And your post doesn't either. Isn't the rule to report and move on? How exactly is this thread against TOS?
It has a list of benchmarks and proofs trying to show that AMD does have advantages, and it is not a failed platform. What is the problem with that?
