How important is a PSU for overclocking?

Thread Starter
gave my friend my old rig.

e2180
gigabyte p45 ud3p
"300-350watt PSU) cooler master cant remember but it was pretty low wattage and old.
4gb 800mhz corsair ram
zalman 9700led cooler

I was running it @ 3ghz stable when I was using it with a 450watt PSU now it's failing at even 2.6 load???

tried auto for the voltages, and some other random settings but it keeps failing at boot.

what's the deal? haha

the importance of a good PSU depends on the chip you are overclocking. for instance an athlon II when OCed draws around 65w at 3.7GHz (60w stock) but a i7-3960X when OCed to say 4.6GHz draws upwards of 160w compared to 130w stock. Also the wattage in a PSU is not as important as the 12 volt current. if the PSU has most of it's wattage devoted to the 12v rail then you need less wattage. Older PSUs are less 12v biased so they require a higher wattage to power the same CPU.

It's important....That PSU is most likely crappy (Most low end Cooler Master's are) In my old setup, with a Logisys PSU, I couldn't get my E8400 stable past 3.46GHz even increasing voltage, the PSU was garbage!!!

IVE GOT A CORSAIR HX650 AND I7920 OC'ED TO 4.0 24/7 AND AN EVGA GTX460 OC'ED ALSO RUNNING THE TRIED BUT TRUE X58AUD3R V1 AND IM PULLING 200 WATTS FROM THE WALL IDLE WHEN I LOAD UP SCYRIM IM PULLING CLOSE TO 400 SOMETIMES WUITE A BIT ABOVE SOMETIMES WHEN I AM NOT AT MY PC IT WILL JUST RESTART BUT NEVER WHEN IM USEING IT SO IM THINKING MY PSU IS RUNNING TO MUCH LOAD 42A ON THE 12V RAIL IS GOOD BUT WOULD BENIFIT FROM A HIGHER RATING WITH HIGFHER EFFECIENCY ALTHOUGH ITS HARDER TO GET TIGHTER VOLTAGE REGULATION WHEN YOU STEP UP TO PLATINUM STATUS

Very important but not as important as the motherboard being able to aid in the deliverance of that DC power. A low ripple, good PSU with a solid vrm motherboard should mean it's up to the silicon to OC well. You were using a 450w but you are now using a garbage old CM PSU and can no longer achieve 3Ghz? Rather self explanatory, is there a GPU on that system?

1. Caps lock is dumb for making full posts with, so don't do it.
2. Punctuation please.
3. A PSU's efficiency (bronze, silver, gold, etc) has nothing to do with its electrical performance, such as v-reg, or its maximum output.
4. Any decent PSU is designed to and can operate at its maximum rated output for extended periods of time, so spiking up to 400 watts from the wall is really nothing for the HX650. And accounting for efficiency (lets say 85%) your computer is really only drawing 340 watts at that point.
