SATA ii or SATA iii cable for OCZ vertex 3?

Thread Starter
Hey guys got the vertex 3 at the door, just wondering does it matter what cable i use? I will be plugging it into the 6Gbps port on my mobo(not the one in sig) Not sure if i have sata 3 cables, any way to check? Will i still get the same speed if i use the ii?

Also on a side note, whats the point of having SATA connections on the back of the mobo/PC? Dont most HDDs need a power cable as well?

The Sata II cable, in theory, should be the same as the III.

Use the II cable and bench the drive, this will tell us if it's all good.

Ok so i did a bench, 480 read and 87 write.....is that normal for a vertex 3? Its connected to a 6Gbps port but these numbers seem to low.. score was like 320 or something

Also under RST it shows that data cacheing is enabled, how do i disable it? I want to use the ssd as a game drive only, would the caching be slowing it down? I can find an option to disable it.

What benchmark are you using and what size drive do you have?

For instance if you have a 60gb version and use as-ssd, you should have a 455mb sequential read a 85mb seq write.

My OCZ Vertex 3 is supposed to be rated 520MB, max read is 210! Thats with a SATA 3 rated cable and 2 different SATA 6 motherboards!

Mine gets
544mb/s max, 469mb/s average, 131mb/s min read.
388mb/s max, 201mb/s average, 85mb/s min write.
With the HD tune tests.

Using the AMD Sata 6 driver since the marvell one seemed to be capped at 480mb/s but kept the same average and min speeds.

Maximum PC did a test with the very first SATA cables to the latest SATA cables. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/your_sata_cable_slowing_down_your_data_transfers_max_pc_investigates

Basically all SATA cables are the same although it is possible you might get a few defective ones. SATA I, II, and III cables are just branding for resale to sell more cables to customers or for confused customers.
