i5 2500k Overclocking Questions

Thread Starter
I was recently working on a build for one of my teachers at school and he was looking for another video rendering rig, so he picked up the parts and asked me to build and overclock it. I'm fairly new to the sandy bridge way of overclocking (i originally learned on an i3 540 which was great fun at 4.5 tongue.gif) and I also got his i7 930 to 4.00Ghz and he noticed a huge difference in speeds to render videos. So my question is, a 2500k at 1.4. Good? yes/no? and the main cooling of any overclocked computers that i have worked on is a hyper 212+

Temps are good on the 2500k at 5.00, at about 65-70 and its running on a P8Z68-V and I am going to do some prime testing tomorrow morning.

Lastly, a multiplier block of 44 on a 2500k on a separate computer is pretty low if my memory serves me right, since myself and a couple people i know have passed that by a good deal.

at 5GHz thoose temps are pretty high if there idle... maybe you should get a high end air cooler such as a Noctua D14 or Silverarrow or go water for as 5GHz OC.

A hyper 212+ should be ok at 4.4 on an I5 2500K.

BTW: if the rig is used for video rendering, why didnt he go an I7 2600K with HT!!!! smile.gif

Sorry, i failed to mention those were full load temps. I have no clue why he didnt go with a 2600k, maybe because he got the 2500k pretty cheap? ill have to ask. but it idles around 33-35. the noctua D14 or the NH-D14 would be overkill for a 2500k in this situation. i was rather surprised how i got to 5 with a $40 cooler haha thumb.gif

wow, thats awsome. 65-70 under full load and 33-35 at idle for 5GHz on an I5 2500K and on air so your cpu must be from a good batch smile.gif. what cooler are you using? i take it at $40 its not a hyper 212+!
1.4x V for vcore is pushing the limits if i read that correctly.
Interesting to see your resdults from your Prime 95 test thumb.gif

Just starting Prime95 biggrin.gif

480

Pics of build

450

450

Its a piece, I know tongue.gif

450

Edit: looks like 5 GHZ at 1.4 isnt quite stable. after about 15 mins of prime i BSOD'd, so its time to up the voltage a little wink.gif
Edit2: Raising the voltage seems to work a little, but the temps obviously go up with it. So lowered multi by 1, 1.39 volts. hopefully this thing stays stable tongue.gif
