How can we catch [H]ardOCP and EVGA? - Page 15

I'd help, but setting it up seems crazy hard. How do I get my rig to run all 8 cores and BOTH GPUs all at once? Can that even be done?

I'm not saying it's a bad program. But for good CPUs, a VM of Linux does show some decent improvments. Not 50% better, but another 1-2k points a day is certainly within reach. Native's even better, but few people like Linux that much. :P

My suggestion still stands: OCN folding needs to partner with hardware makers. Get them to put their GPUs/mobos/CPUs in the hands of our folders. I still think someone like Zotac or MSI who competes with EVGA in the GPU and mobo market would be a possible partner. Business always like positive press, and showing how their hardware helps a charitable cause like FAH and was the hardware used to top their rivals...is bonus points.

But in reality, you're not gonna top EVGA as long as they're handing out free mobos and GPUs to their folders.

Sorry to be negative, but it's just the cold, hard facts...especially in today's economy. Most people nowadays can't afford to drop $120-600 on a GPU and $140-300 on a mobo and $300 on a CPU...plus the cost of other parts...just to fold.

I know I can't. Otherwise, I'd have an i7 system still, would live in a nicer house, and could afford to run the rigs even in hot weather.

*shrugs*

Call it what you want. EVGA makes hardware. They have a huge advantage. Odds are if we did start catching them, they could just hand out more hardware or put more online in their offices.

It's just being honest. We are at a severe disadvantage. Looking for legitimate, legal means to match their output is the right way to do things. And, one of those ways would be to offer regular contributing folders free hardware to increase their output and helping out the cause more. And, one way to do that for OCN while reducing/eliminating their costs...would be to partner with someone who supplies/makes hardware.

Anyways...that's all I'll say about it. It was just my 2 cents worth...that I've suggested for a while.

The real advantage of running under a VM in windows is the ability to pick up hugeadv aka bibigadv work units. They'll take 2-3 daysat 24/7 for a 3930K to complete, but you get so many more points compared to regular SMP that you're running right now. The major problem is that most guides use vmware 3.0 that only allows 8 threads. Virtual box allows more, but I haven't seen a guide for it.

Your 2500K still seems low to me - my 920 with 6 threads@ 4.2GHz gets 16K SMP, but maybe it's just the GPU's dropping the 2500K usage to 2 threads. The 2600K is a great for gpu & cpu folding, not only because HT gives you a bonus, but because you can go to 6 threads, folding only runs on a non prime number of threads, i..e the GPU may only be using 0.5 of a thread, but if you only have 4, it'll drop to 2.

here are some guides for running bigadv in a vm if you want to commit to running 24/7 for periods of time:

Maybe the foldathon cash prizes should go towards lottery tickets. If we win the lottery, every active folder can be bought a 4P rig smile.gif
