How can we catch [H]ardOCP and EVGA? - Page 30

My $.02:
More titles handed out, badges, you know epeen stuff.
Free Overclocked accounts when users reach X amount of points. Perhaps that number would be 5 million? 10 million?
Free shirt or lanyard, or something tangible at 10 million points...or some high number of points.
But yes, incentives(like free stuff) always motivate people biggrin.gif

Agreed. There is little incentive to fold for OCN, I didn't even know about folding until I joined OCN, then started folding, racked up a ton of points, and now its an issue of loyalty and community. I have been tempted at times to switch to EVGA for bucks, because by now I could've racked up a ton of EVGA bucks...

Though it'll be interesting to see how the changes to bigadv pan out for the teams. For now it seems like it will not be a boon for us.

I'm just stating my opinion, but when the bigadv changes take place, the gap is going to deepen, and its going to kill us. AFAIK, EVGA and H discourage using the core trick, and the majority of their folders are high end GPU folders. When the bigadv changes take place, our points are going to be slashed by more than theirs.

Business always like positive press, and showing how their hardware helps a charitable cause like FAH and was the hardware used to top their rivals...is bonus points.
But in reality, you're not gonna top EVGA as long as they're handing out free mobos and GPUs to their folders.
Sorry to be negative, but it's just the cold, hard facts...especially in today's economy. Most people nowadays can't afford to drop $120-600 on a GPU and $140-300 on a mobo and $300 on a CPU...plus the cost of other parts...just to fold.
I know I can't. Otherwise, I'd have an i7 system still, would live in a nicer house, and could afford to run the rigs even in hot weather.

If hardware makers wanted to do a program like this, they would just do it themselves on their own website without OCN. Most manufacturers already have forums on their websites anyway.

The fact that EVGA is a hardware seller and can offer the EVGA bucks as well as top of the line prizes can make a difference. The idea of working with ASUS, that would be my choice, or MSI etc... would help to bring an appeal that is harder for us to grab right now. In fact no sense just having one sponsor have several. We have challenges through out the year so work with there marketing / public affiars people to sponsor these type of events for us. They get some publicity which they want, they offer a nice prize or two which helps us and Folding ends up the big winner.
The fact is, this is not hard to do and I even have experience doing it when I ran a nonprofit for a while.
Many though not all companies set up a format to allow requests of this very nature to be submitted.
We have a lot of things going for us here that would make this a very worthwhile opportunity for companies to do this.
I am talking Dell (Alienware), ASUS, MSI, HP, Corsair etc...
This is not rocket science and it's not a sell out. The companies are in fact open to doing things like this. You just have to ask and submit the requested paperwork etc...
It's something to think about.

It is something to think about, but in order to realistically catch up with EVGA and H, we have to increase our numbers. (see more below)

Maybe some people will get attracted by better prizes during the foldathons, I don't know.

I've went through this entire thread and these are all the posts that mentioned incentives. If you want to attract more people, you have to have a more realistic point of attraction. When potential folders say, "Why should I fold?", "For the Cure!" is a good response, but also an abstract one, that unless someone already knows what the folding project is all about, holds little value. I realize it may not be feasible to offer an incentive program, (bc Deeeebs would cost OCN a fortune tongue.gif) more special offers to folders could be offered as incentives. Like a 5% off incentive at the OCN store, or more prizes for folders only.

Just today, I saw the $2500 giveaway and the Ducky keyboard giveaway. Why not have more of these giveaways for *just folders*. In a little over a year of folding, I have won $25 from folding. Not really much incentive for increasing my electric bill $20 a month for OCN's folding team. This isn't my personal opinion, I am just stating this as a potential argument as to why we can't attract more folders.

More special offers for folders that don't depend on the luck of the draw, would be a good starting point.

If it happens again, you might want to post the work log and see if anyone can help figure out what's happening.

I don't know about the 580s since I only fold with 460s, but, I've heard others leave one CPU core free so the GPU has some CPU resources. I've used all CPU cores and folded on both CPU and GPU at 100% and never had a halt, but, that was with 460s, not 580s.

Another possibility that just came to mind, is your PC power state set for performance so it never lets the hard drive go to sleep?

If all else fails, you can always try a reinstall ... save your completed work unit folder if you want to keep the logs and then just copy them back over after the reinstall.

What would really help is if someone were to make a detailed, sticky thread on "The Benefits of Folding" and put it on the main page. I know from personal experience that folding has reduced my heating costs in my house dramatically and helps keep my warm toasty in the winter. The thread could describe what folding is, show all the great benefits it provides, etc. It could also describe how it doesn't take a massive toll on you computer, or how running a unicore/smp client takes a miniscule toll on your gaming/web browsing performance.

OCN has 239,000 users, but only 8,000 folders, of which only 745 are active, which equates to about 0.3%. If we could get 1-3 percent of all OCNers to fold, our production would increase dramatically.

If anyone would like to collaborate on a guide, let me know. thumb.gif

I think its been said that incentive are/is the only way to go.

There is currently 3 give away that I know of and non of them have anything to do with Folding. confused.gif

Can't those give away have some sort of requirement, like the bigger the value the more folding points would be require? instead of having a number of post requirement? Because someone like me don't post as often but I do fold for OCN, I know that I don't make points like the rest of you guys but I am sacrificing my hardware per-say and money paying the bill(even tho it's not a lot)... The main question that needs to be address is why would someone that's in or on OCN would fold for OCN, when the competitive offer them much more that just "folding rank points"... because there is probably a lot of people here that folds for the competitor.

The downfall of Troy was from within...

Sorry if my post are hard to understand, English is definitely not my native language

P.s I been getting BSOD recently and it's killing my points just because I'm usually not around when it happens and I work a 12-hour shift. it's usually the 124 BSOD and I just got a new one today which was 101 BSOD... mad.gif I have reed some of the reasons why people have been getting the 124 and sadly I don't wanna touch those voltage so I just left them at auto. It's so annoying because it's so random. mad.gif

P.p.s I wish AMD would work on getting Folding@home to work better on their GPUs... If only I had bought an NVIDIA GPU(s)

Well said good sir, well said. smile.gif

I'm currently taking pictures of my bios to show Homebone07si so he can help if possible.

So is there any foreseen progress on how we can catch the competitive because we are not gaining on them, so it must be the opposite...
