Recommend an Amp/Headphone combo

Thread Starter
Alright guys here we go.

I would like to get the whole shebang, and want great sound. Here is a little about my listening style first...

1.) I like Bass and Vocals to stand out. I listen to everything from DeadMau5 to Classical Bach and Beethoven.

2.) I need suggestions on an AMP/DAC (combo or separate)

3.) headphones. In ear and a good set of over the ear

4.) I am a little bit of an Audio noob. I bought into the Bose stuff for a while but now it just pisses me off. Sorry for any bose fans.

5.) Something I can take with my Ipod Also.

Thanks!!!!!

The only headphone amp I have tried is the fiio E7 which works fine for what I need it.. As far as headphones I would say Sony MDR-V6's for under $100 dollar budget. You will definitely get good bass and vocals with these headphones, as they are very "in your face" when compared to my HD 595 (sennheisers, much more laid back sounding). But just look at reviews for the MDR-V6, its a great product and lasts people a LONG time. Best of luck!

Should clarify that the E7 is not only an amp, but a DAC/Amp combo. The amp isn't as great as the E9, but for most headphones it does the job well.

Sorry, left the budget out. I can go up to 500 for everything.

Including DAC/AMP ear buds and Over the ear headphones.

I listen to music off my computer quite a bit, and I listen to my ipod because I travel a lot. I have a good laptop with Line out also, and digital optical mini TOSLINK

the e9 is a very good amp to have at that price range, but only needed if your headphones need it.

good luck man, thought i'd clarify somethings in your op. thumb.gif

For ipod: HRT Streamer II
Headphone recommendations: Senns (differ on bass and vocal emphasis) 555/595/598/650 or Beyerdynamic DT880/990s
Computer: Soundcard at that range
For the beyers: E9 amp.

Yes, sorry I should have clarified. I believe the MDR-V6's are only 60 something ohms, so not a hard pair of headphones to drive... Low enough impedance for even an ipod to run decently (but you will notice you will need to turn it up higher to get the same noise levels as some "normal" headphones.) They are great sounding headphones though. The HD 595's I have are basically glorified HD 555's, and they are open eared. While I like that for some things, the MDR-V6's are by far my favorite. Good luck on finding the audio quality you like tho! smile.gif
