Building the ultimate 2001/2002 system

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just thought I'd share a system I've put together over the last few days and will likely be doing more to, mainly aesthetically, though trying to keep as 'period' as possible.

First off, my friend had given me a system for spare parts. This system had not worked for over 4 years (as shown by "Your virus database is 1372 days out of date") and nothing was expected to work by the owner. They also had a much newer system and didn't want the cost of fixing it. I had already been having thoughts of building a legacy system after having problems with a lot of games I used to love on my modern system ( MechWarrior 3, Age of Empires 2 and the like).

Knowing that the system had been in a house with some heavy smokers I stripped and cleaned it before even turning it on. It was one of the worst I had seen, though, unfortunately, didn't take any pictures. The PSU went straight in the garbage, as I had a couple of spares anyway. After cleaning and TIM replacement the thing started up and just happened to have an Athlon XP 1800+, the chip I had wanted way back in 2001 when I was running a Duron 750 @ 1GHz. Good start, then. ASRock motherboard with AGP and DDR? That'll do for now, though I would love another ABIT eventually.

Next on the list was a graphics card. I spent a couple of days checking kijiji regularly and thought about what I wanted. Back in 2001 my parents had ordered a Geforce2 MX200 32MB for Christmas. I was working in the store at the time, so the store had given them the 64MB version at no extra cost. but the card I really wanted was the Geforce3 Ti500. The next time i checked kijiji it was there. not only that, but it was advertised by a former reseller as 'new and unused' for $10! bingo.

450

When I went to pick it up I was also offered another item I remember being in the forefront at the time, the Sound Blaster Audigy. Advertised for $15 i was offered $20 the pair. How could I refuse? so I picked that up too.

450

So now I had pretty much the best that money could buy in 2001! And that's pretty much where I'm at.

450

Things I'm looking for now:

Case: from roughly 2001. I'm not sure what to look for as I was never very interested in cases back then, i just added fans to cheap ones.
Round IDE/Floppy cables: for obvious reasons.
EL wire, fans, UV anything biggrin.gif

As I said, just looks need changing now as it plays every thing I wanted it for with aplomb. Also, I know I could just go on ebay and get everything else, but generally I'd be paying more in shipping than the computer is worth and where is the challenge in that?

Any suggestions are welcome

For a case, I'd suggest a simple lian-li like the PC-7B plus II. Decent quality and elegant, understated looks that won't be an eye sore, but still fits the legacy theme.

Alternatively, you can go with a common cheap "gamer/modder" case from the era.. an Aspire X-Dreamer for instance.

Also, if you can snag yourself a classic cooler like a Thermalright SP-97 or Zalman CNPS7000Cu that could be fun. Do a lil overclocking perhaps? wink.gif

I'm not actually sure which direction I want to take the case in yet.

Cooler wise a store I used to work at used to have a NOS socket A cooler with a TEC and a controller that fit in the PCI area, which I would love just for the craziness of it. Any Ideas what cooler that would be anyone?

For a case.... Thermaltake Xaser maybe? I can't remember how far back the original Xaser dates to. Also I think the original Cooler Master Stacker might have been around back then if not a few years later.
This build is similar to one I did, but I used a Gateway with an Intel Pentium 4 CPU, its the one in my Sig. I would recommend maybe upgrading or doing a dual boot OS with Windows XP (If the HDD is large enough) and maybe upgrading to 1GB of DDR (if the motherboard you used can support it).

Also here are some nice older cases you could look at:

I'm actually keeping more of a lookout for a tasteless over the top case from around that time I can use/mod, but your input is appreciated!

oh the Ti500..... Amazing GPU that I could not afford.. At that time I didn't even have an AGP slot on my K6-550Mhz board.. SO I had a 32mb MX200 PCI GF2 lol..

I did have agp, on the ABIT KT7A. great board, possibly the best I've ever owned. I kind of wish I'd never sold it to my uncle. but hopefully he got good use out of it.

Upgrade time! biggrin.gif

One of my friends had a tower that had been sitting in storage for the last 4 years since a chipset meltdown and I was offered everything there was left for $25. This included previously mentioned dead mobo (ASUS A8N SLI-deluxe), processor (AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+), case (Aspire X-plorer), IDE DVD burner (Sony) and DVD-ROM (LG). As a nice bonus, after the chipset fan had died he had fitted a nice new blue Zalman heatsink.

So, without further adiue

I love sharpies. This is the previously beige floppy drive thumb.gif

Now only a few things left to do. Find round IDE/floppy cables, move both 80mm fans to the front, add 120mm fan at back, new 80mm fan at top, find better cpu cooler and change lighting/fan grills.
I may think about customizing the PSU cables also, but that would be at a much later date.

UPDATE! For myself more than anything, planning on keeping one of these every time i build a system from now on.
Anyway, a friend of a friend was clearing out some parts, so i ended up with a few for free!
1x Enermax 450w PSU
1x ThermalTake Golden Orb Cooler (risky I know, but with modern paste seems to be doing great and looks awesome. still have stock at standby)
1x black round floppy cable
1x black round IDE cable
1x 30GB HDD
Windows XP shall be going on the 30GB for a wider range of period games and the rest is pretty self explanatory. I especially appreciate the PSU as I have an inherent distrust of no-name power supplys. I did get some other parts, but these turned out to be not so useful and the motherboard will become part of a wall display (doesn't support a high enough FSB) and the video card will be stored away (I remember really wanting a Voodoo3, but doesn't really fit with the system. Or AGP slot)
So, a pic:
450
EDIT I know the lower ODD has now power, but it has been a problem in POST, need a spare hour to see if it's the drive or the cable.
