Building the ultimate 2001/2002 system - Page 2

OK, so a few changes, nearly finished now!
Got a new CPU cooler from a friend in new condition and put a smaller fan on it to fit the board.
I also played around with the cables somewhat, resulting in this:
338

Then, while browsing Kijiji yesterday I saw an ABIT KG7 for $5... I had to have it. So today it has changed yet again to this:
338

Complete with Unreal fan grill from Value Village! biggrin.gif
338

As for accessories I was given a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer that I got running perfectly with minor resoldering. I found a Gravis Xterminator for $1.99 in a Thrift store and a PS2 Loghitech Media Keyboard on Kijiji
338

So, as it stands:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ running as a 2000+ easily. Still need to find out how far I can push it
Motherboard: ABIT KG7
Video card: ASUS GeForce3 Ti 500
Sound card: Creative Soundblaster Audigy
OS: Windows 98SE / Windows XP
Network card: to be found
Possible addition: IDE Raid card
700

And one more of the cooler
338

Edit: I discovered that the cooler is an Alpha PEP66

Ok, you got me, the case was 2004. But that is now gone, and has been replaced with a Thermaltake Xaser II (2002) (http://www.overclockercafe.com/reviews/cases/Tt_Xaser/index.html) other than that, the board is now 2001 (http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/abitkg7raid/), proc 2001(http://techreport.com/articles.x/2975/1) video card 2001(http://www.overclockercafe.com/reviews/VGA/ASUS_V8200/index.html), sound card 2001 (http://www.tweak3d.net/reviews/creative/audigy/) , network card 2002 (this revision, older revisions available), the hard drives are roughly the right age (it's hard to tell with so many models) and the optical drives are of unknown age. That just leaves the PSU, which is, admittedly a 2003 model, but the only good power supply of a similar age I've found.
Also bare in mind that this is a continually ongoing effort, and if I find something more suitable it will be going in the system.

The Athlon XP 1800+ at release was $252
The Asus v8200t5 Pure at release was $349
It's hard to find the ABIT KG7, but the RAID version was $157
Soundblaster Audigy was $99
The case was around $140

I think this gives a good indicator of price.
As for use, this is built purely as a gaming computer with Windows 98 drivers. All of these parts were enthusiast parts at the time and, as today, would have been gamed on, overclocked and benchmarked.

I had a A8N-SLI Deluxe and it was a great board (Got my A64 3200+ Venice from 2ghz to 2.6)

HOWEVER, the northbridge fan on the A8N is garbage. So if its not been replaced with a decent aftermarket one be prepared to find one.

That's one of the boards now on my wall and, yes, the fan died, the chip died, and the board is now art. A Zallmann cooler was bought for it, just a little too late lol

Thanks for the advise, though!

Fun stuff. My antique CM Praetorian case would be awesome for your retro rig. I think these came along in '02 and were pretty much top of the line for a while.
