Newbs First Build! [Need Suggestions]

Hello everyone thanks for taking a look here. I am in the process of building my first rig smile.gif Super freaking excited btw. My main reason I am doing this build is because I am in serious need of an upgrade. I currently have an old c2d dell laptop that can barely play old games like CSS and struggles with about 13 fps in LoL redface.gif So this new rig I want to be able to play all the latest and greatest games like skyrim, bf3, metro 2033, crysis 2, diablo 3 etc. Also this rig will be used for some fraps recording of gameplay and some light photo/vid editing. I already have two components of my build which are the case and processor. But I'm going to need help with the rest of the components here. Before I get flamed for getting the 2700k I actually bought it through Intel Retail Edge holiday promotion. I got that 2700k for $128 shipped (WOOHOOOO!) and I do plan on doing my first overclocking as well on that chip. Im trying to keep this all under $1500 as well.

Case [owned]
Fractal Design Arc Midi
CPU [owned]
Intel 2700k

These two items above are set in stone and already purchased. These next items are going to be everything else that I need. If you guys think there are better products or deals or if i have overkill products, missing something etc. PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I will definitely appreciate it. Also I prefer to use Newegg for online (they really took care of me on an RMA once) and I also have a microcenter about 40 min away from me as well that I am willing to travel to if better deals are there. But I am really willing to shop anywhere legit.

I like the futureproof PCIE 3 compatibility of this board and I have used ASUS uefi BIOS and really I really like it.
Memory

I prefer black for color but am willing and open to anything.

Vid Card

I'm more partial towards the red side of life here.
CPU Cooler

Thermal Compound

OS

The tried and true solution here.
Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236153
Again this rig is primarily for gaming so I want 24" monitor or larger. I'm not concerned about 100% color accuracy and extreme viewing angle capabilities here. This monitor has great reviews on newegg.

So there is my list of components to power my next beast. I'm hoping with that vid card I shouldn't be having any problems at playing games at least 1080p with some AA. Also once the 7000 series cards release I might decide to pick up another 6970 for cheap (relatively) and CF those babies. If I am missing anything or you guys think there is a better or cheaper solution I should take please let me know again. I am chomping at the bit to get this rig up and going biggrin.gif My finger is twitching at the checkout button lol. But I want to hear more from the experts here at OCN and make sure I'm doing it the right way. Thanks again!

Welcome to OCN! I am glad you chose to post here before buying. You wouldnt believe how many people foolishly pull the trigger on builds they arent sure about and end up regretting it later. The following is what i think of all of your components so far

Motherboard - I actually just bought one of these and used it in a build for my friend. this is a great board and has some really awesome BIOS. That board is one of the best in the price range. Nice Pick!! thumb.gif

RAM - Corsair vengeance is great! And looks like a good deal. Nice Pick!! thumb.gif

Power Supply - While XFX makes some decent power supplies, antec, seasonic and corsair are the kings of the PSU market these days. You are over paying for that XFX PSU IMO. Here are a couple of better options.

Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 - 95$ after rebate.
this is the PSU i own in the rig i use daily. this thing is great and i would highly recommend it. However, since you are going to be using a mid - tower case, you may want the modular version of this PSU which can be found HERE - 110$ with 10% off promo code given on page. It is also worthy to note, that if u plan on running the card u are looking at in SLI, you will probably need a 1000 watt PSU. So unless you get 1000 watts, that upgrade path is out of the question. THIS is pretty much the only Corsair option if you go that route. If you decide u want a big PSU so u can do that, post back and i can find u a better deal on a 1000 watt model. Also if you do end up going 1000 watts, you will absolutely need a modular PSU. because i know ur mid tower wont have enough room for all of the cables that come with a 1000 watt unit.

Hard Drive - Hard drives are extremely overpriced right now if you buy online because of flooding in Taiwan. I would recommend checking out microcenter or a best buy or something. i guarantee u will find a better deal in stores.

Vid Card - I am an Nvidia Enthusiast myself tongue.gif but the 6950 is a decent card and will do what you want it to do. Nice Pick!! thumb.gif

CPU Cooler - The hyper 212 is a great budget cooler. Nice Pick!!thumb.gif

Thermal Compound - No complaints here! Nice Pick!! thumb.gif

OS - Use Linux IMO tongue.gif What u have selected will be fine though

Monitor - Acer makes great monitors and the one u are looking at looks great! 2ms response, LED backlit, and full HD. Just wish Acer listed their static contrast ratio. Nice Pick!! thumb.gif

All in all looks like a solid build. The only red flags are the PSU and HDD. Good luck with ur new build and post back/pm me if u have anymore questions. Enjoy!

cheers.gif

Thanks a lot for the feedback intex +rep to you!

Good call on switching the power supply. The tx750 modular looks like a better deal for the $. Crossfire down the road I will have to get a new psu. But by then next gen cards will be out and maybe a single card solution might be better (maybe...2 is always better than 1 right? smile.gif ) Also your right about picking up a HDD cheaper in store right now. I work at best buy part time while going to college so I'm going to check there and use my discount I'm sure it will be cheaper than the $150 1tb samsung f3 drive I was going to go with. Thanks again! smile.gif

Just a few notes! Chances are since you work at best buy you have External Drives that haven't been marked up. I work at Target and we just marked up our Ext. HDD's yesterday by 80%-130%. There were a few that weren't marked up like the WD Elements USB 3.0 2 TB for 84.99 I bought the last 2 pulled out the Caviar Green 7200 32 MB Drives and am using them for temporary price solutions!

Good luck, Nick
