Throw the heatsink straight on top of that, it spreads really well already biggrin.gif

Don't wiggle the HSF too much when you're fitting it though, you'l get air bubbles.

I'm a little paranoid about screwing this up lol. Once I put it on I cant just take it off to check if I did a proper job, if I start it up and the temps are fine is there nothing to worry about? What problems would air bubbles cause?

Air bubbles will increase your temps pretty dramatically.

Look, put it on, tighten it right up. Load windows and run Intel burn test

Are you still using the stock cooler? If so then your temps at stock should be between 55 - 60/

NEVER spread thermal paste. spreading causes bubbles.. i use antec 6- nano diamond. less than a peasized adrop and put the heatsink on.

31*, 4ghz cpu, 3000mhz nb-cpu, 1.425vcore, 1.375v cpu-nb, arctic cooling freezer 64 pro( not a good cooler. just better than stock) in a well ventilated case.
49* max prime95
i didnt spread the paste.

yes you can use speedfan

You need your processor to be on load when you check the temps, so yes you can use speedfan to check temps but intelburntest to load your processor up biggrin.gif

The highest temp using a standard test, according to speedfan, was 65C. Doing what I normally do, its about 10C cooler. Oh and I touched some of the dry residue from the old thermal paste, its not harmful to humans is it?

if thats total stock and your hitting 65 ? it isnt good at all.

12 gig of ram ? 3 sticks of 4gig or 2x4g + 2x1gig sticks ? if you arent running virtual machines or encoding, i'd drop to sticks. you arent running in dual channel with 3 sticks and there is a performance difference. could be causing your cpu-nb to ramp up the volts. not enough to cause that kind of heat but, we need to figure that out too
what case are you using ?
did you spread the paste or let the cooler spread it ?

*edit* what are your voltages set to ? you can use cpu-z to check or even in speedfan. if its speedfan you use, click the voltage chart open and watch the vcore graph. see how i it spikes and how low it dips

I'm running 2x4gb + 2x2gb.

This is my case. http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?category_id=19&product_id=2920

I let the cooler spread it, I wiggled it around a bit in an effort to secure the heatsink, had a little trouble.

Not sure if you wanted me to check voltages on idle or while on load, but just browsing the internet it fluctuates between 1.36 and 1.37, occasionally almost reaching 1.35 or 1.38.
