Recently just finished up a fresh install on a semi-beastly machine I just got for work. My job primarily needs me to run as many as 3 VMs of Windows 7 at the same time. I am also virtualizing OSX 10.7.2 and Ubuntu or Crunchbang. The primary mission is for me to both be able to Virtualize Applications in a clean environment as well as use OSX to remote into other Mac machines and sandbox troubleshooting environments.

There have been some problems though with hangups on install both on native OSes and Virtual. Just in general performance hiccups.

The Machine Specs:
Dell T7500
2x W5645 XEONs (6 CORE w/ HT)
24GB of DDR3 ECC
ATI FirePro v5800
OEM PSU 1100W
1.5 TB HDD

The boot time into Windows is hitting about 4 minutes. Entering POST is about 20 seconds (I assume RAM initialization) running through checkups is another 20 seconds. The remainder of the time is booting into Windows on the Starting Windows screen. I have never in my life seen a computer take this long.

Installing applications which seem faster on other machines, home computer/laptop, take a grueling amount of time. Office 2010 took over 40 minutes to install the other day. Small applications seem to take a long time to initialize before the actual installer begins. I see a lot of tasks get started in Taskmanager for up to 5 minutes, before I see the dialog actually show up. I can't see any issues in Event Log all drivers are up to date (manually installed by me, including the BIOS.) Note: This is all before any VMs are running.

Virtualization is not too bad, VMWare Workstation 8 is working great, but everyonce in a while I will install something in the VM and the host OS at the same time and both will hang (hours) until I kill it myself. I at first thought because they were both writting to the same drive there was an issue there, but then I tried to a virtual disk that was pre-allocated, then I tried putting files on a separate drive (VMs) and it would continue to hang. I would assume just don't do that (doctor it hurts) however its not re-creatable on demand and other things will cause it to occur.

I don't have any errors, warnings, or issue in Logs, but I can just feel like something is wrong.

My previous home desktop rig which was an i7 980x w/ 24GB DDR3 and many similarities in boot time, but there was never an issue virtualizing or installing programs. It feels like something is choking the performance. Windows 7 Enterprise is installed, it registers all 24 threads, all the memory, the memory passed an overnight with MemTest but to be honest, I don't think ECC can fail MemTest... Dell has an internal testing program which I also tried and it passed. I do connect to a network domain, however, this is all on a local admin account so network is not an issue.

The real funny part is that my virtualization Windows 7 is working faster then actual desktop. Parameters of the VirtOS are 4GB with 4 Processors.

I was wondering if there was anything I could do to essentially kick the computer in the ass and wake it up. Thanks.
