What is your maximum budget?
600-700 give or take
What country are you in?
USA
What will be the uses of this laptop?
College paperwork, web/skype, photo editing, VMs, maybe gaming
Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
None
What screen size do you require?
Small ~13"-14" NO BIGGER
What screen resolution do you require?
MOAR THE BETTER
Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
IDC
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
LONGER THE BETTER, 7hrs+ ATLEAST
What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Portal 2, Minecraft...
What operating system do you need? (if any)
And it can come with any Windows 7, I have my own i'll use.
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Don't care
How much hard drive space do you need?
Cheapest, I have a SSD
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Webcam, Ethernet (lol), SD card reader, Blue Tooth.
Currently looking at?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215183
Is there anything else we need to know?
You get rep for helping? biggrin.gif

Needs an i5 no i3's tongue.gif

Can you find a 540m on a ~14" laptop with good battery life?

That Acer looks to be a pretty solid buy. That is the least expensive 13-14inch laptop with the 540m graphics card and the i5.
It looks like you would have to jump up to a 15inch to get anything faster in the gpu department, But, for that ~$100~ you can get a 555m gpu that is roughly 2x as fast.
Although the 540m should be able to play the games you listed at reduced quality.

Your in a sweet spot as far as price/performance. You could drop down to a Llano machine to save some money, but it would cost you performance.....

All in all, id say pull the trigger. Good machine, and free shipping to boot!

Has to be W7Pro? Most laptops come with Home Premium, and *maybe* an option for Pro as an upgrade (business-class laptops being the exception)

Toshiba Portege Z835 $800 biggrin.gif http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Port&%23233%3Bg&%23233%3B+Ultrabook+Laptop+/+Intel&%23174%3B+Core&%23153%3B+i3+Processor+-+Silver/3868228.p?id=1218437467260&skuId=3868228&cmp=RMX&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=3868228

Or R835 $800 (some models for $750 as well): http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Portege-R835-P81-13-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B005KP070I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323191558&sr=8-1

Or R845 (14" Portege) $650: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-R845-S85-14-0-Inch-Laptop/dp/B005KP0BJU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1323191558&sr=8-3

Or Asus U30-series laptops - not listing because there's way too many models (U30, U31, U33, U35, U36).

R835/R845 would probably my choice for a new laptop. Acer TimelineX's look good as well, mostly just a matter of preference. 4830TG and 3830TG are definitely the best with a decent GPU.

The difference is that none of those machine come with a discrete graphics card. While the "HD" Graphics on sandy bridge are better than they used to be, it is still leagues behind what AMD and Nvidia have to offer. You might be able to play minecraft, that would be the extend of gaming.

For $100 less, stick with the Acer.

(p.s. That ultrabook is a sexy as h3ll though smile.gif

I would agree with your original choice ( Acer laptop you linked in original Post ).

Why?: Acer in my opinion is a very reliable laptop brand in my experience, I would avoid for example HP at all costs, if you don't want your GPU or CPU dying on you.

greater or equal to i5 sounds like a good choice too, and the Acer one qualifies.

The video card seems good enough to handle your needs.

4gb ram should be fine based on your use, though if possible I would opt for 6-8gb of ram just to be safe.

Hope this helps
