Onboard sound + headphones enough? 100% gaming.

I am just wondering if my ATH - AD700's would sound better with a sound card such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-SB0880-Express-Blaster-Titanium/dp/B001E25KDK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323107602&sr=8-1 or if the current onboard setup on the ASUS P8P67 LE motherboard would be fine.

Ive been told that using a sound card makes a difference over on board sound but no one can seam to tell me what the difference is. I use a pair of Turtle Beach X12's and in Battlefield 3 i can hear every sniper shot, every explosion and every footstep. Ive been told that is a great card so if you do get one, go with that one.

With those headphones a xonar DG would suit you better as they have a headphone amp built in
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Channel-Sound-Card-XONAR_DG/dp/B0045JHJSS/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_2

the difference between a soundcard and on board is the general sound quality, sure you may hear every shot and what not but tone, clarity, warmness, and just overall better sound are some of the differences, of course you would have to also pair it with well performing speakers/headphones to notice a difference as well.
Small wonder.

Alright thanks! Right now I am using speakers from my mothers old 1998 gateway machine. They have a little sub that allows the speakers to be plugged in and then from the sub you plug the speakers into the PC so I am not at this time looking for a sound card for speakers.

I have this card and you will be amazed at the difference. Audio Technica AD700s will gain a lot more crispness and clarity. When I added the DG to my HD595s I got tons more low end volume and punch without any muggy sounds. You will be surprised how much you have been missing out on.
