Hey guys,

For one of my senior projects at my university, I am to write a working and fully functional application for any platform. So naturally I chose Android. I have just recently completed an alpha build of my game, and was hoping I could coerce some of you to download and tell me what you think.

Anything from changing the menu for better functionality, or changing graphics, anything you can think of that will make this a more compelling game. If you have played wc3 or sc2, then the concept of the game may be familiar to you wink.gif

Elemental Tower Defense ALPHA v0.1.2

Whereas traditional Tower Defenses overlook armor type and attack type, Element TD creates its own world wherein each invading horde and attacking tower has a specific corresponding element.

Each element takes additional damage from the element preceding it and retains near-invulnerability from the element following it. The circle of elements goes as follows:

...Wind > Earth > Water > Fire > Wind...

Elemental TD contains a unique form of leveling up defensive towers. Beginning at level 6 and for every 6 levels after that, the player can choose an Elemental Guardian to summon. These guardians channel the secrets of deep and powerful elemental magik, and when killed they grant the player the use of a specific element.

These elements either infuse existing towers with their specific qualities or inhabit their own, specialized elemental tower. The player can combine elements and create unique dual and triple element towers. No two elemental towers are alike in Elemental TD.

Each element combines with another element to create a unique dual tower. Upon combining, the player can choose the dual-tower's reigning element, which will decide its type of damage (ie. air, water, earth, or fire). Each dual tower can combine with a third and separate element to create a triple element tower. There are 6 dual towers and 3 triple towers in Elemental TD, with more to come.

Each element can be chosen again up to two times total. Higher levels of elements allows for the upgrade to higher tiers of elemental towers. Towers may only be upgraded if all of their component elements have been brought to the appropriate level. In Elemental TD, better towers are only available by killing more Elemental Guardians.

While players' instincts might be to build as strong a defense as they can manage in a Tower Defense, you are rewarded for putting off building that expensive tower and hoarding your resources. Every 15 seconds, the player gains interest on their unspent resources to the tune of 3% of their current cash. This bonus can make or break your game depending on how it is used.

In allowing some resources to accumulate, you may find that early level creeps sneak past your defenses. However, Elemental TD does not trade off money lost in kills for money gained by hoarding. Players no longer lose resources for missing out on a crucial creep kill. In Elemental TD, leaked creeps respawn at the start of the path. This gives you another chance at the bounty they carry, but gives the creep another chance at you.


PLEASE NOTE: This is an alpha build, it has not been tested on all devices. Please report bugs by sending an email or posting in the comments.

Any other features that you would like to see in the game in the future should be posted too. I will do all I can to implement them!

If you notice in the top left for each wave, you will see two icons.

one of these:

Each wave (with the exception of 'bosses') are given a random resistance and attribute.

For resistances, from left to right, composite, earth, water, fire, and wind.
Elemental resistances will take 50% damage from its resist, and 200% from its weakness

Composite resistance takes 85% from all sources
For the elemental resistances, the horizontal bar represents the resistance, while the vertical bar the weakness.
(ex. the icon on the far right: wind resistance. A creep with this icon takes 50% from wind damage, but 200% from fire.

Now for the attributes. From left to right: None, Healing, Shielding, Speed, and Undead

Healing - creeps with this buff will heal themselves for 20% of their max hp every 20 seconds after being struck in combat
Shielding - creeps with this buff will become invulnerable to all damage for 3 sesconds, on a 12 second cooldown after being struck in combat
Speed - creeps with this buff will gain 300% speed for 1 second, on a 3 second cooldown after being struck in combat
Undead - creeps with this buff will resurrect after 3 seconds with 33% of their max hp. Usable only once.

Seems like an interesting twist on a typical TD game, will be downloading. For those of us testers that are not programmers, what is the best method of reporting bugs?

edit:

Running it currently on an HTC Incredible. So far, so good. However, I am currently unable to upgrade towers? Basically this meant I just had to create a bunch of wimpy towers in order to take down the elemental of level 6, and i was still unable to upgrade the towers.

I just passed level 6 and I unlocked the Air Tower. An issue that I have noticed with both the Air and Laser towers is that when they fire, in the opposite direction of the attack, is a repeated image of the "top" of the tower, if that makes sense. For example, when the Laser fires, there is a repeated image of the green bar that rests on top of the gray box, leading AWAY from the enemy/tower to the edge of my screen.

As I was typing this post, I reached level 12! I had built two Air cannons and they have been wrecking everything, even without upgrades. When the next Elemental spawned, Water, I found a bug. when my Air cannons targeted him, they didn't damage him (expected), they made his life bar increase! I think it tripled? I'll run the game again and find out. But each shot continued to increase his HP, until his bar disappeared entirely, and then when a cannon attacked him, the game crashed.

another thing that would be nice to see if if each wave was either shorter, or if there was a bonus for clearing a wave before the time ran out, and the next wave was sent. Sitting there for a minute waiting for the next round is boring.

So far so good! I look forward to an update!

Reporting bugs here is fine! Though if/when the game does crash.. Use the report button. It gives me a nice dump of what what the app was doing when it crashed.

As for upgrading. It's not very intuitive right now, but first you click on the upgrade you want (it should display the stats that will change as well as upgrade cost) then to accept the choice, simply press the button on the bottom left of the pop up. Hope that made sense. I want to change the menu into something that looks better and makes more sense... But I figure I'll do that after I get everything else working.

The bug that you mentioned with the air tower. I'll have to look at the code, but I know exactly what happened (ie. A parentheses in the wrong spot). I'll have a fix for that and the other bugs tonight in my next build.

Can you take a picture of the graphics issue? I can't seem to recreate it on my captivate or s2

Crash was an incorrect word. It exited to the screen which has you select the difficulty level (like you had just pushed "New Game").

Also, I am unsure of how to take screenshots within a game, if you're able to help me figure that out, I'll gladly show the issue.

Also, I've only managed to upgrade a single cannon so far, I cannot for the life of me figure out how I did it. :\ Again, I suppose being able to take pictures would help here.

Red spot being the enemy I am "attacking." Damage will be dealt, it just shows an odd animation in the opposite direction. Confirmed to also do this for the Fire Tower. That one is nice, because the animation is constantly showing, but you already said you cannot reproduce it. :\

I believe these may be related to firing rate:
For the lazer, these just flash on the screen. (1.5 speed)
For the air, they are constant. (.66 speed)
For fire, constant. (.31 speed)
For earth, near constant. Brief flash from time to time. (1 speed)

Upgrades:

So for the above picture, sometimes I can click on the bottom left (the triple gold arrows), then the top left, the 4 color bands, then the yellow arrows again, and my tower will upgrade. Sometimes, just clicking the yellow arrows will upgrade. Some towers won't upgrade, some will. Same with cannons. Just seems random when it will or will not happen.

Edit2:

I've been playing around with upgrades, and I noticed that a Level 2 Lazer (blue colored) will briefly speed up enemies after the shot hits. Maybe this was potentially due to the element of the enemies I was facing, as this no longer seems to be happening against a "blue" wave? Also didn't happen on a "red" wave? Interesting. Perhaps there are more factors I am unaware of?

In the first two rounds I did the follow: Bought 2 Lazers, one was put to Level 3 (accident) and one to Level 2. I also bought a cannon and put that to Level 2. I then purchased another Lazer, round 5, and was unable to upgrade it the same way I had the past couple towers, even though I had the cash? At some point, I think I upgraded the first cannon from level 2 to 3, but I'm not sure when. I am still unable to upgrade any of my Lazers or new cannons, even the original one that is still Level 2.

Edit 3:
Sorry, I editted my original edit with a couple of new details.
I've run into this "crash" issue multiple times now. I believe it has to do with the elemental towers. I'm going to run a game without using them and see how many rounds I can make it through.

Edit 4:
I'm definitely going to say that the Elemental Towers are bugged currently. I'm working on round 18 at the moment, which I've never made it to before.

More on upgrades: It seems that I was able to do upgrades up through Round 5, but was unable to do a single upgrade once Round 6 began. Some sort of conflict with the elemental bosses and how they unlock new towers?

Also, when there are a lot of towers running, the game begins to lag, A LOT. But, the interesting part is that the timers continue at the same pace. So either, I'm just thinking there is a lot of lag, or the sheer amount of cannons I have going on are actually slowing down the enemies?

Edit 5:
Working on round 23. I was able to randomly upgrade a cannon to level 3? One that I hadn't been able to upgrade in previous rounds. Clicked on all available lazers/cannons and was unable to upgrade any other ones. There is a single group of mobs walking through everything I throw at them, all the rest are being destroyed. Not sure why these are immune? Weird.

the laser towers seem to shoot in the opposite direction of the enemies. Damage is still being dealt however

Just got home. I'll have a new build soon that _should_ fix all of the issues y'all are reporting.

i would love to try this but galaxy nexus STILL isn't out yet so tongue.gif

if i were you though i'll call AIR something else. From experienced TD players air sounds like something that only target air units.
