[eWeek] AMD Supporting Project to Bring Android to PC - Page 3

The main benefit of this is that it will allow Android to run on AMD and Intel smartphone/tablet mobile chips. I don't think Android will be too successful on the PC considering it's just going to be another Linux distro.

This I agree with.
But, Android may turn out to be a good (cheap) resource for making old out of date laptops useful.
Think about this, 12 year old niece wants her own laptop, instead of buying her a new laptop (which she will probably break like she just did with her 1 month old iPod Touch) I could throw Android on one of my old laptops that is collecting dust in the closet. It would give her a machine that would do what she wants. From what I have seen of Android it is a bit more resilient than Windows when it comes to kids that click on everything on the web that blinks and flashes at them.

One thing Android has going for itself is the Market, it has a large consumer base. If they can scale Android's mobile apps to have similar functionality on the desktop environment then AMD's efforts won't go in vein. Right now there aren't any large companies behind Android x86 port, so it's definitely a good thing. We the end users get more options as far as the OS goes.

Unless android for desktops is different in nearly every single way, I have no interest in ditching windows. But I await what they will do.

I've had more problems with Windows applications being buggy and "not responding" aka crashing constantly than I have with Android apps.

You or anyone else been able to get 3.2 working in Virtualbox/VMWare with networking? I tried the Asus 3.2 but the only options in Android are for WiFi which don't work. This guide is for an older Android eeePC http://code.google.com/p/android-x86/wiki/VirtualBoxHowTo

odd, I've had the opposite.

Likewise, Windows tends to be easily fixable. Other OSes...not so much.

Then you're lucky.

Until I can trust an android app to either not crash while I'm using it, or come back to the exact state it was in when it crashed (i.e., like how the more-recent versions of Office can do with your documents), then I have no interest in this.

Apps crash all the time on my phone and tablet--neither are modified OS's in any way.

If my windoze computers (applications) crashed 1/10 as frequently as my android devices, I'd buy a Mac in a heartbeat. (but thankfully that's not the case!)
