[DH]AMD Radeon 7000: New Rumors - 79x0 at $399/$499 - Page 11

pssshh this revision just isn't worth it. the xdr2 ram *might* have been next-gen..but now they're probably saving it for dx12 and lower manufacturing costs. nothing special here, i'm perfectly happy with my 5970 which will probably be as fast as this card on most resolutions. waiting to see what nvidia has up its sleeve..but i doubt it'll be anything groundbreaking either.
The question is this rumor is true: is the 7970 closer to the GTX 590 or GTX 580 in performance?

It better be a far off rumor. Otherwise many people will be waiting for the 6xx series.

AMD has said it will compete with the 6990. Some people like to think it'll be faster, some people think it won't come close. Some people think it'll only be barely faster than a 580.

The only thing you can be relatively sure of is that we should know by the end of January. At least that's the consensus so far among rumors.

rumor or not(all the BD rumors did amount to something), typically the newer the card, the higher the price to performance ratio. you can go back a few models and get a couple of 6870s or 6850s for less than the price of a single gtx 580 and get better performance. you pay for bragging rights. same goes for the gtx 460 sli trumping a single 6950 or 6970. there is a happy medium, but usually not until the series has matured and you start to see new drivers and price drops.

Does this source have any credibility? If I recall, this Don guy was bashing on a particular brand of something a while ago.

donanimhaber doh.gif it should be banned as a source on this site it spouts lots of .....stuff. That reminds me to get some toilet roll tomorrow.

I think the best donanimhaber thing was when it was saying that bulldozer is 50% faster than the 990x. I think that shows just should how creditable a source it is. WCCF is just as bad I can't stand that site.

I'm more interested in the release dates. 78xx after 79xx? The 78xx was exposed to be out in december I thought...

7970 will be 384-bit memory bus and 3GB of GDDR5. Total memory size for 7950 unclear.
7900 on schedule for January launch.
7970 - $499; 7950 - $399
7900 will use GCN architecture
DX 11.1 compatible
Estimated performance: Radeon HD 6990> GTX 590> Radeon HD 7970> GeForce GTX 580> Radeon HD 7950> GeForce GTX 570> Radeon HD 6970 .
7800 and lower cards will use VLIW-4
7870 - $299; 7850 - $199
February launch
7600 series will have 128-bit wide bus.
7670 - $179; 7650 - $119
Launch probably around the time of the 7800
7990 Launch in March possibly near CeBIT
Will use two 7970 GPUs
The estimated performance hierarchy is a huge eye-opener. If the 7950 can't beat a 580, that's really bad news for AMD and a huge sigh of relief for Nvidia. This could be our first indication that perhaps it's time to temper expectations.

We will see at the end of the day where performance sits but I will be really shocked if a 7950 is not faster than a gtx580. It is almost guaranteed to be. Imagine a 6950 with 40% better performance.
