I wonder if someone can do a challenge and try to beat the game with the scorpion following everywhere...

Again, I'll remind everyone about our piracy rules. The next person to admit to piracy will get warnings/infractions.

one of the mass effect games had something like this, though it was cracked just as easily as the rest. Im sure this will be to and the fact that its already knows means it will just get cracked faster.

That's awesome. Plain and simple. That game is on my "to buy" list this season and this just reinforces it. I love when devs do "clever" things like this.

LOL. That's how it should be done. I mistakenly bought a game that's been in my wishlist for a long time ago... started it up... and got Ubi'd. "Could not connect to server, try again" mad.gif WIll never buy Ubi again.

This DRM is acceptable. tongue.gif

It depends on how it is implemented though...what is the difference between a game that won't start because you aren't connected to their validation server constantly or a game that lets you start it and then makes it impossible to play because you are not connected to the server? In either case it is the same DRM, just one is rather humorous. So I think more information is needed to deem it acceptable.

I think it would be more fun to have a door that didn't open...then the pirate would run around in circles for who knows how long before they gave up.
If I recall correctly, the main reason why most people find DRM unacceptable is because it does the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do: discourage pirating the game. This DRM does just that.

The source just says it is there...not how it works. Does the thing appear if you aren't connected to the Internet 24/7? Does a CD key disable it? Game registration? Did they seed it themselves (if so it will be very quickly labeled as such)?
I don't think this would be so much as a speed bump to crackers.
Edit: HAHAHA! that would be awesome if some one was on the game forums complaining about a game bug of this pink crab thing that can't be killed.

That happened with Batman Arkham Asylum. People went onto the forums complaining that they couldn't use glide, and it turned out that they had added that in as an anti-piracy deterrent.

For amusement, I found an article about the post the guy made on their forums.
Quote:
"Hi!
I've got a problem when it's time to use Batman's glide in the game. When I hold , like it's said to jump from one platform to another, Batman tries to open his wings again and again instead of gliding. So he fels down in a poisoning gas. If somebody could tel me, what should I do there." Cheshirec_the_cat asked on a new thread.

After one user told him to "try buying the game" and commented that it has not even been released publicly for PC yet, an administrator, Keir, summed up the problem for him.

"The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free.

It's not a bug in the game's code, it's a bug in your moral code."

I recall seeing this before too, except it seems like Arkham City decided to go with Securom instead. frown.gif

Still, this is 100% awesome. All games should do this (have it as an option for legit copies - I WANT LOLZ).
I know, right? Haha, that would be great to have as an option.

What they expect to happen is this; Pirate: ooo got it working, ohes noes a ginat invicible scorpion!!! RUN, I QUIT!

What will actually happen; Pirate: ooo now I'm going to crack this DRM while running away from the giant invicible scorpion how fun!!! Thanks DEV team can't wait for your next release!
You do realize that pirate does not automatically equate to guy that is ultra-skilled at cracking any kind of software, right? A lot of those pirates will probably quit the game after realizing there's no easy solution to this (assuming there isn't one).

But most of those very same pirates have the patience to wait a few hours, maybe days and at worst a week or 2 for someone who DOES have the skill to crack and release the game again. Then that same pirate will get the game. No skill required for 99% of pirates lol.

This will likely cause some irritation from pirates for a very short while, untill it gets worked around and new torrents are released. As with most DRM, I only feel bad for the legitimate consumers who get attacked with DRM. Best case scenario for this DRM, a few of the pirates get this and decide to ditch the game for good, but most will simply wait for a new torrent.

I disagree with ANY form of DRM that punishes an innocent consumer to "try" to mitigate piracy. It's like putting innocent people in prison for fear of having a criminal on the loose. We wouldn't accept that, we shouldn't accept this, simple as that.

Now if they can prove 100% beyond any reason of a doubt that this cannot harm a legit copy, then I'm all for it. But since I highly doubt they can, this is no better to me than what Ubi does, and I do NOT condone this.

Was funny though, and I can bet we'll see a list of people who can beat the game with this thing following them, would make for more bragging rights than beating the game on hardest setting.

This is not DRM because it doesn't effect legit users.

You're assuming the fake copies will simply die off and not be circulated any more. Also you're assuming that people will know the good copies from the bad ones before downloading.

Again, the point is to flood the torrent market with terrible copies and keep it flowing. And it doesn't have to end with the scorpion. The dev could easily mod the game to include other subtleties that aren't fully apparent, but create a terrible experience.

Sure, some people may get genuine copies of the game. No security is fullproof. Even Nasa gets hacked. But if 90+% of the copies of serious sam in the torrent market are the bad copies, then this idea is effective.

Same for me with the Speed Racer game back in the 90s.
