Okay guys, I'm in a dilemma. At the moment I'm using a dual core processor (Athlon II X2), which doesn't deliver the performance I need any more. I am looking to upgrade in late January (2012 obv) to a better system, most likely an i5 2500K, motherboard which supports dual graphics cards, and 8 gigs of RAM. The plan so far is to get an i5, wait for the Ivy Bridge i7s', hopefully grab one, replace the SB i5.

My question is whether I should upgrade soon, or wait for Ivy Bridge. At the moment I have a HD 6770, but the CPU seriously bottlenecks it. Should I try to muster up enough money to get 28nm graphics card, or just wait?

Thanks biggrin.gif

I believe you meant i5 2500k or Ivy Bridge as thread title, lol.

Well, I had a Phenom II and I was going to wait for Ivy but ended up not. I won't regret it, I don't expect desktop Ivy's to be avail untill June-ish anyway.

Also the 2500k & 2600k will still boast tremendous resell value and the 1155 board you get will be Ivy Ready.

Ivy's going to be amazing at power consumption and likely amazing at OC's as their top models will be 77w CPU's.

It's up to you, I think either is a good idea!

Win-Win

I'd wait in terms of CPU, newer motherboard revisions will be released alongside Ivy Bridge. Also the new AMD cards are out in January which could be worth waiting for. Get it all in January is my advice...plus by then you'll have more money saved up.

I thought about that too. Since SB has been around for almost a year, the recent revisions have probably cleared up all problems related to the platform. If I get Ivy Bridge as soon as it releases, then it may (hopefully not) turn out to be a scenario as when SB came out.

Looking forward to the AMD cards lol

Oh and another question:

7XXX series or GTX 6XX series?
I know it may be a little early to ask, but who doesn't have this on their mind lol
Judging by the past, which vendor is gonna release more powerful cards than the other?

Based on recent GPU slides, AMD is clearly going to have the more powerful cards at first. Nvidia's GPU's may or may not be more powerful, but they are so far off they may lose customers to AMD.

Interesting point there. If I sold my 6770 right now (mint condition, not overclocked) how much would I get for it? Would there be many people on eBay willing to buy it?

Not sure what you'd get for it, someone is bound to want to buy one though maybe even here on OCN.

Note: You can sell here on OCN once you get a Rep of 35+
