Looking to purchase this build pretty soon. Thoughts?

Thread Starter
I want to seriously upgrade my rig in the next couple months. I'm pretty sure I have everything picked out but would like a bit of insight. I'm trying to keep this right around $1,000. Of course, less would be better. But, If I need to go over a few dollars I will be okay with that as well.

Don't laugh but I will be using an old HP Pavillion case for the build. The case is perfect for my needs and I like the look of an OEM build.

Well here it is:

XFX HD-6870 Radeon HD 6870 2GB
$209.99

CORSAIR Professional Series HX850
$169.99

CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
$84.99

ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z LGA 1155
$169.99

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge
$219.99

Noctua NH-U9B SE2 92mm
$59.94

Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB
$109.99

Subtotal: $1,024.88

Would it be worth it to upgrade to the i7 for another $100?

I won't be doing too much gaming but will be using two 24" 1080p monitors. Not exactly sure of the best graphics card.

Thanks Guys!

well, the upgrade to an i7 really depends on what you want to do. as a normal pc with minimal gaming and basic use (no video rendering/music editing/engineering analysis, etc.) the i5 is sufficient and you probably wouldnt see the increase of going to an i7. also, are you going to overclock? based on the aftermarket cpu cooler i would think you would.

regarding a video card, if i come in saying i like evga and nvidia there is someone else who will come in saying they like sapphire tech ati's. in all honesty, both mfg's make good products which perform awesome and as far as the reseller who stamps their logo on the reference design card, it really goes into what additional cooling apparatuses they put on the cards and their warranties on which cards would be preferred.

if you are air cooling (which im guessing you are) i would look at a card that has reviews stating the air cooling features are much better. i know the evga 580 classified has a very nicely upgraded air cooler on that card, although the card is absolutely massive. i know there are ati products as well that have beefed up air cooling features which would be a main focus for myself if i was doing a similar build as you.

your ssd is an excellent choice, psu is an excellent choice (i believe that one is fully modular as well which helps uncramp the case), mobo is fine, excellent ram, etc.

a couple concerns i have is if the noctua will fit in the case you want to use. i know most of their cpu coolers are huge. same concern is for the videocard and if it will fit in the case. i dont know the dimensions of the case you want to use, so outside of suggestiong to measure everything in the case, i cant really give much better input. i do know that some of the oem cases like the hp pavillions arent always standard atx set up (some are micro atx, etc.).

if the case provides issues on size, there are plenty of smaller oem looking cases without all the flashy lights and windows that provide quite good airflow through the case that arent too expensive.
