[Mashable Tech] Scientists May Be Closing in on the Higgs Boson Particle - Page 4

"Until now. Europe’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which has been consistently operating since 2009 after a botched grand opening the previous year"

Once I find a single error in the validity of the article I'm not sure I can trust any of it. LHC was down last christmas, his oversight? biggrin.gif

What the heck is a giga-electron volt lol

Just like a giga byte or a giga watt. Its a prefix to a unit of measure to represent a mesurement of one billion. so in other words 1 billion electron volts.

I know what the giga bit is tongue.gif I should have been more specific. I will just google what an electron volt is.

"Mass of subatomic particles is described by the mass-energy unit GeV, Giga (billion) electron volts. (The amount of energy an electron gains moving through a potential of one volt in a vacuum is one electron-volt,1eV.)" From the reference I posted earlier.

Planned technical stop over Christmas, same as this year.

The LHC? It was being prepared for a heavy ion run for a month or so, now its into the Christmas tech stop. Occasionally they have issues with cryo but that's normal - they expect that things like that will happen.
