Codecs

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

Had been installing Suse Linux servers for qmail + clamav (simscan) + spamassassin / Ipsec / Squid (junk & blocking ) LAMP for clients till 2-3 years back and after that never touched Linux.

But now I have installed Opensuse 12.1 and using it after such a long time it seems a bit confusing, I want media codecs for Linux like klite if anyone can tell me which is the best or do I search on sourceforge ?

What player are you looking to use?

There aren't really any packages like "klite" for linux/opensuse, typically you would install like gstreamer-plugins-bad/extra/nonfree (not sure  of the name of them in opensuse, just use yast software manager and do a search for gstreamer), this will give programs like totem/xine/etc, the ability to play proprietary codec encoded files.

If you want to use like VLC or mplayer (one of the graphical front ends to mplayer), you will need to go here:

http://software.opensuse.org/

and search for them (as when i ran opensuse, they were not available in the standard repo's), just search for them, and do the one click installs, they make it incredible easy to expand the software avaiable to opensuse thru here.

gstreamer is already installed, damn now a new problem after installing ati catalyst drivers and rebooting linux and logging into gnome it says "gnome failed to start" how I wish I had kept in touch with linux frown.gif.

Any idea about a good desktop based linux other than Suse or cent or ubuntu ?

You will probably have those ATI related driver problems in all the linux's.

I wouldn't use cent as a desktop tho lol, server yes, desktop...maybe if it was used in a office situation...

Well you have tried and true Debian 6.0, Fedora 16 is really nice from what little i've used, they've seemed to have fixed the problems that have plagued it since like fedora 12/13. I guess it really depends on how "involved" you want to get, as there is arch, slackware, gentoo to give a go if you want. there is no right or wrong answer here imho :)

Under KDE the ati catalyst has no error. I was never comfortable with Fedora. And have been using Suse since almost 96 IIRC and I very comfortable with it except that 2-3 years break has made forget quite a few commands and stuff but I will get it back.

I will check out Debian.

I have gstreamer / xine / totem installed , will try with VLC.
