New to WC!

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
I'm looking to water cool my pc after the holidays are over. My question is are wc kits any good (if so, which ones), are they expandable (without to much hassle/cash) and are they worth it? Or should I just go for a custom loop? I'm looking to start off with just my cpu (minor overclocking will happen, for now), then once I have my second gpu I plan on adding them to the loop, then some more overclocking.

Hmm...

If you are super-enthusiast, get what Los Hog said, because I know nothing about super water-cooling.

For people who aren't that extreme and have very good case flow already so that water cooling of GPU/RAM is not needed, a close-loop solution works fine. Such examples are the H80 and the H100 from Corsair (psst...H80 is great! I'm using it right now at 3.6 GHz with 100% load and my CPU temperatures are 30-35 degrees Celsius!) and the Antec Kühler 620 and 920 (I think those are the right model numbers...?).

There are even pre-assembled close-loop GPU water cooling units and GPU/CPU water cooling units. PNY offers both with it's XLR pre-overclocked solutions. Right now, I think the PNY website is down (for me at least), so I can't give you a link to it.

For the money, you are better off going with what Los Hog said. Its expandable unlike the H100-H60 Units. And we will give you more rep with a RASA kit than a H60 tongue.gif

@funfortehfun. I've got a H60 collecting dust right now. It did perform well and had good temps but I really like the look of a water cool setup. I'm thinking about the Antec Kühler 920 for my second system, read great things about it.

@Los Hog. I was looking at the XSPC Rasa 750 RX240. I've read that the included tubing tends to turn yellowish, so I'll be looking for different tubing. Maybe something in red to match the rest of my case. What's a good fluid and additive to use?

@PeteJM. Rep is always good.

Sorry for the double post, but what gpu block will fit a 6950? I can't seem to find one. As it turns out I pick up my Sabertooth P67 tomorrow, i5 from Santa and second 6950 the first week in Jan (maybe boxing day, wife permitting) so I think I'm going to order the kit next week. Need to get my parts list in order. Again folks, thnkx for the help.

Good suggestions from the others, also note that there are an RX version (full size) 120mm radiator and a thinner version which is the RS version for those that don't quite have enough room in their cases. I would recommend Primochill UV tubing as it bend well without kinking.
post #8 of 12
RX240 will work fine but it's too small for cpu+2xgpu. You should have at least 120 worth of rad per block (so min 360 for cpu+2xgpu). You could get the RX240 kit and buy 120 or 240 rad later, but It's usually better to do it right the first time especially if you know you'll be needing the extra rad in the future.

The rasa kit tubing is good but if you're going for colored tubing, I'd say Primochill is the one to go for. Use distilled water as coolant with nuke or silver killcoil.

I think you're going to need universal gpu blocks + heatsinks for your gpu's as MSI cards aren't reference design. It'd be a lot easier to WC reference cards, there's loads of 6950/6970 blocks around there.

I may be wrong but that's a block for reference card which wont fit MSI's non-reference cards?
