My old Core 2 Duo E8600...

(this might seem a random thread, but...)

...Finally hit 5GHz on air! Some of you may remember me trying to hit 5GHz with it, but it was a no go. The RAM held it back. I could never get over 4.8GHz since 480MHz (960MHz DDR) was where it would top out at.

I recently sold it (and the board, RAM, and heatsink/fan) to someone I know of, and they paired it with different RAM, took it outside in about freezing temperatures, and had a go at it. They hit 5GHz (5011MHz to be exact), albeit barely. Here's the validation.

It's not mine anymore, and it might sound odd, but it was amazing seeing the board/CPU I once had hit 5GHz days later across the country on the internet. The interesting thing was that this was done using 800MHz RAM too. which means it was still likely RAM holding it back (800MHz RAM doing 1000MHz is pretty good as it is, so I'd imagine it was the RAM still), so it still likely had more! I imagine he didn't want to kill the CPU, obviously, but considering it was on air and probably has some headroom more, wow. Now I have a Core i5 2500K and hit 5.2GHz at least (haven't tried for more yet), and it's like... nothing special anymore. I truly believe Wolfdale will go down as one of the most important releases, ticks or tocks. I already miss it...

Does anyone know what the most these Core 2 Duo E8x00s have probably seen on air? I know they've hit 6.xGHz to 7.xGHz with extreme cooling, but what about air? Feel free to post your high overclocks on air as well, if you wish.

Wasn't 5ghz nearly unheard of before sandy bridge?

I would consider this a great oc.

It wasn't "common" no, but it wasn't unheard of, at least for extreme cooling. I'm not sure about air cooling though.
