something has gone kaput in my new system.

Heya guys,
Well a few of you may know that I've been building a rig for myself as a birthday present... well i got all the parts. and it worked great! but then just earlier I was playing terraria on it which is kind of a minecraft clone but in 2d. really low graphic demand and not at all taxing on my CPU... but anyway halfway through playing my computer just spontaneously turned off. then when I tried to turn it on again the led's in the fans flashed on for an instant and then straight off

I took a look inside my case and hit the power button. my fans turned on for a millisecond and spun 1 rotation but the system didnt start up. My first thought was a dodgy PSU, as i had been noticing around 2 hours before that my 12v rail was at 11.8v, so I switched it out for a backup unit that I have and the problem remained. tried removing all usb controllers, my graphics card, sound card hard drives and only using 1 stick of ram, but still the same problem. My CPU temps have been REALLY cool, at around 38 degrees celsius under load with BF3.

Someone help? O.o I've been so excited about getting this new rig and it has been working so well, but now this? literally fourth day of use. Any ideas? or further diagnostics I can run?

System:
AMD Phenom 2 960T was unlocked to six cores fully stable.
ASUS M4a87TD Evo Motherboard.
ASUS Axe Gold Cooler.
4GB Corsair DDR 3 XMS3 Ram

Just as a clarification there were NO overclocks on the system at all (i havent had a chance to ^^ ) only the motherboards Core unlocker and the Asus Turbo Core Technology.

Thanks,
~Dan

I had that issue when my Mobo was shorting on the case.

I ended up having to get taller stand-offs. The original ones I had didn't come with the case, and were somehow to short. Or the case was warped, lol.

I don't know if that is your issue though. That's just what was happening to me.

hehe its all good tongue.gif atleast now i know that it isnt just me who has had this happen. I'm literally sat here chain smoking trying to think of solutions. I've pretty much got it down to either being the mobo or the CPU. the CPU was brand new.. however the MOBO was a refurb model :/ i have warranty on the cpu but not sure about the Mobo.... I hope this is something fixable.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, keep them coming!
~Dan

Quick edit, i have just noticed that my led's flash on once when i press the button in, and then again when i release the button out... i don't know if this has any relevance??
EDIT 2: My bios has been cleared and still nothing, just what I said above.right now all that is plugged is my ram, psu, and my CPU+cooler.is it likely that it has something to do with the mobo shorting off the case? although like I said it worked fine for 4 days and just cut out after a few hours of really light gaming? seems like something going pop. all my capaciters are intacrt and no swelling or bursts.

Thanks guys!

I have had this problem more than once on different setup sand it was always the mobo. Either something is shorting out or something has gone wrong in the power distribution.

Hmmm so it seems like it could be the mobo more than anything else? I'm going to try seating my mobo on something non conductive and see if it is the case shorting it, but i can't see why that would just happen now after a few hours of use, Surely that would happen from the start... nothing has changed at all as far as the case is involved. the case was sat still and just died.
Thanks ,
~Dan

hmm okay, Deffinately not the case shorting the motherboard. another thing, the green bios light on the motherboard stays on throughout the whole time the power is on to the board. so I'm now positive it isnt the PSU, does this mean it isnt the mobo either? O.o I can see no reason why this is broken? could it be the CPU?
