brettjv's Skryim Rant/Suggestions thread ...

Thread Starter
Yeah, so many of us love the game and have been playing it obsessively, but because I find myself annoyed with it so often as well, I just thought I'd start a thread where we can all rant about it's shortcomings, and make suggestions for what would've made the game better. Who knows, maybe Bethesda will see our thread some day, and actually, you know ... care wink.gif

First I'll start with a suggestion: there should've been an 'Adventurer' skill tree, with perks and such, just like we have for Destruction Magic or Sneak or Heavy Armor. The way you'd level up Adventurer is just by completing random quests, clearing dungeons, etc. And the perks on the tree could've included stuff like 'pick ingredients, and fire magic/bow while on horseback' or 'show all major map paths, and allow better zooming on map', or 'show ALL quest markers, no matter what type of quest', that kind of thing. This way, we could level our characters via actual 'adventuring/exploring' rather having to resort to silly (and painfully boring) stuff like spamming iron daggers and enchanting them w/petty soul gems.

Another suggestion is that there should've been special enchantment 'items' that the player could find, something along the lines of Titan Quest or Dungeon Siege 2: in these games, there's items you could find that you could do enchantments with, and items like armor/weapons/jewelry would have various numbers of enchantment slots, so if you wanted a sword with fire/ice/leach mana, you could collect the proper pieces and find a three-slotted weapon, and 'roll your own'.

Special, unique enchantment items in the game make for very cool 'loot', and allow for a TON more variety to the enchantment system, and they could've been incorporated along with the current system really easily.

Lastly in the suggestion department ... Making an RPG WITHOUT any Unique Armor/Weapon Sets, with special bonuses for wearing/wielding the entire set? WHO DOES THAT?!?

Now, on to my complaints, a large number of which fall under the general umbrella of 'severe console-itis':

My number one complaint is that, looking at the INI files and already available mods, it's pretty obvious that there could've been DOZENS more graphical/IQ settings available than there presently are. It's far from the worst I've seen (that would be Darksiders), but the gfx options menu has a case of the consoles, no doubt.

A corollary to this is that the performance flat out sucks in some areas (particularly at certain spots in the the larger towns) where even people w/the highest end gear get drops to 30-40fps, with low GPU usage. I've proven beyond doubt that this situation is being caused by a huge CPU bottleneck that appears out of nowhere. It's clear to me that their needed to be an option available to 'lower CPU usage' in the options menu, w/o a major drop in image quality!

The next thing on my list that I want to see fixed (or rather, greatly improved) the most in Skryim is the lame 'Favorites' system. It's lame in so many ways ... first off, the fact that the favorites menu shows only like 6 things at a time is ridiculous. The menu of items should expand to make the list as tall as the screen. It also should have 'grouping' and 'sorting' capabilities, so you can have all your weapons at the top, together, if you so desire.

But even more important, SHOW US THE STATS on the friggin items, like it does in the main inventory screen! It's like, what, I am supposed to just REMEMBER all the stats on every item in my favorites menu, just by the stupid NAME? There's all this screen real estate to the right of the menu, just show us the gd PICTURE of the item, along w/the stats and description, like the regular inventory menu does!!! mad.gif

They should also add the ability to 'equip' one scroll and one or two extra magic spells (specifically for occasional-use 'timed' spells like healing, summon creature, clairvoyance, magelight, flame-cloak, StoneFlesh, etc), so that you can use one at any time w/o having to freeze game, then look up the spell on your frigging favorites menu, equip it, use it ONCE, then go through the same process to go BACK to what you're using before.

Put another way, WHY do I have to 'equip' a 'Summons' spell in one of my two main weapon/spell hands, when the summoned creature I just made lasts for like a whole minute? It's just a STUPID mechanic/design. And potions should be good for like 10-20 strikes or shots or the like not just applied to a weapon or arrow for one strike.

Basically, It's so much more arduous to deal with single-use scrolls, potions and various occasional-use spells like healing or summons (or telekinesis or clairvoyance or ...) than it needs to be, which leads me to basically never use these friggin things cause there's way too many pauses/menu lookups/button presses involved in the process.

It's also REALLY dumb that they didn't program the directional pad to on the 360 controller to work like it does in the Fallout games, where it allowed you quick access to 8 different 'things' of basically any kind. The d-pad's functionality is basically wasted, seeing as how up/down are both the favorites menu, and left/right on the d-pad are the only 'programmable' quick access buttons. Three functions instead of a possible 8 is really, really lame.

Actually, afa that goes, what would've been even better is something like the radial menu in Assassin's Creed, where they could've allowed for like 20 'programmable quick access favorites' really easily. Maybe made it so the number of items you could store there would level up with your character (in fact, adding extra 'quick slots' could've been multi-level perk in the Adventurers skill tree wink.gif)

There also should be a 'quick inventory' mechanism for your followers, since that is by far the most common interaction you have w/them is trading goods. The fact that you have to scroll down like 5 menu options to get to 'let's trade' is RIDICULOUS, as is the fact that you have to listen to them say "I am SWORN to carry your BURDENS' every single friggin time you trade w/them. I should be able to approach them and hold down X and just have it bring up their inventory (w/o the same smartass comment every single time).

Also, it's really friggin annoying that when you're shopping or otherwise looking at someone else's inventory, you can't see how many of the item you already have in your possession (or in the case of spell tomes, whether or not you're already learned that spell). I really, really friggin hate the lack of this feature.

Another major annoyance is how many 'things' you really can't use when you have a follower, because you always end up killing them. Basically, all your 'adept' spells that are AoE effects, and many of your offensive scrolls (also AoE), go out the window unless you don't care about killing your follower. IMHO, followers should've been made immune to your offensive weapons.

Lastly, I really hate it that there's no central 'character' screen, like RPG games of this nature ALWAYS have. A screen (or perhaps 2) where you can see EVERYTHING (stat-wise) about your character at one glance: Things like your DPS, health/magicka/stamina, all resistances, bonuses, all your equipped gear, any afflictions, all of your skill levels, etc. along with a grid full of little icons (perhaps it'd need to be 'tabbed' by item type) that represent EVERYTHING in your inventory, with various sorting/grouping mechanisms, where you can just hover the cursor over the icon and see everything about that item at a glance, including it's relevant differences between itself, and what you have equipped. I'm talking something like the main Character Screen in Titan Quest, or the Inventory screen in the Stalker games.

I just really feel like the important info, and your 'stuff' in general in this game, is just way too 'spread out', and/or inconvenient to look up, or make use of. It's like I spend way more time 'managing my stuff' than I actually do playing the game frown.gif

Please feel free to add your rants and suggestions to the thread below ... what really IRRITATES you about this game, and how could this irritant have been mitigated (i.e. made better), in your view?

Wow that was quite a lengthy and detailed post. You bring up tons of good points. Many of these started to irritate me by the 3rd day of playing the game. Honestly, I've quit playing it completely and could care less about it at this point. The main quest line is short and not very good.

I also hate the fact that you don't really feel a progression. For instance, after you help one of the Jarls with his quest line, you don't even get acknowledged at all! All he says is, there are no more quests to accomplish. Really? I just went through all of that and I got absolutely nothing for it? Thanks!

Also, they did a good job with randomizing the caves and what not this time, so it's not all just copy and paste. However, there is no point in really exploring them because the loot you get is worthless! Any armor and weapons you have are 99% of the time much better than what ever loot you pick up. What the heck is the point in doing all of that exploring then?

/End Rant. I've pretty much moved on from this game and I'm playing games I missed earlier this year like Crysis 2.

Yup, yup. Some of your complaints would be addressed by an 'adventurer' skill tree, where at least you'll always get SOMETHING for your efforts when you complete a quest ... extra XP/leveling, simply by virtue of the fact that you're completing quests/clearing dungeons, etc. This would make it so it wasn't so annoying that you found ZERO loot that you cared about during your quest.

Speaking of the loot/reward system ... it's IMHO kinda lame if you're a melee dude or archer, but it's HORRIBLE for pure mages. I'm playing as a mage, and aside from the Mage College quests, I basically NEVER find loot I care about or use. Pretty much anythign I find, I just give it to Lydia and hope she will make some use of it. I've got my Archmage Robes and Mordecai mask, so I'm covered for my main armor pieces, and I don't much care about the weapons and shields I find, so ... yeah. If the game added some unique enchantment items, and unique armor/weapons sets, it would've gone a LONG WAY towards mitigating the boredom of the loot/reward system for me.

You also should be able to upgrade your mage armor and your spells (like Fireball or Chain Lightning) in a similar manner to how you can upgrade your dwarven heavy armor and elven sword to 'Legendary' status. Again, the current system in this regard is yet another way that the game is much less interesting for mages.

Dead on to me. And since half of my active quests are bugged, I'm thinking of a do-over with a warrior-like character, just to have some variety on the weapons and armor.

I would love all those chances. I'm kind of new to oblivion since I only played the previous one and got to like lvl 10 twice and
data got corrupted so I didn't feel like starting over again for a third time.

I've enjoyed the game a lot w/o really any bugs encountered, but a lot of the features bug me a lot. Like there are some things
that get set to be used witht he right hand and no matter what I try to do I can't get it replaced by a spell or anything other than
a sword and there are times I'm not even carrying a sword in my inventory because if I want one I use bound sword.

The favorites also kind of bugs me. I wish there was something similar to like wow where you press 1 for a skill or
you have some sort of interface you press like wow or guild wars.

Well I'm playing as a two-handed warrior and a lot of the points Brettjv brought up are just as valid if you play as a warrior. All of the armor you find by looting is worthless. Seriously, if you just spam making daggers and enchanting them, you get the best armor and weapons in the game in a relatively short amount of time. And as you're doing this, even a lot of the lower level armor and weapons already make you so overpowered that the game becomes a breeze.

Thus, making looting and exploring just about pointless. You really just need to complete the main quest and the major side quests(there aren't even that many) and that's pretty much the entire game.

I know that this is asking for way too much but I feel like there should be a very specific quest line for your character depending on the type you pick. For example, if you choose to be a mage, there should be a major quest line for that character, thus making it a completely new experience then if you were to play as a warrior.

Also, the main quest line should have been much, much longer and much better written. I mean, it does sound like I'm asking for Dragon Age: Origins all over again here but honestly, that game did everything so well.

Bethesda should have borrowed a bit from it(at least story telling wise) I mean, make us go on a grand adventure! Make us feel like we have just done the impossible. Yes, Skyrim can be difficult on higher difficulties but I don't mean that way. I mean it should have felt like you are part of something huge that's about to happen and you go on this huge 40-hour quest to put an end to what ever evil there may be lurking.

I'm sure you guys get my point. I feel like this is an adventure-rpg but there isn't so much adventure or rpg.

Oh, I know. But the game is clearly designed around, and about 95% of the world plays it with, a gamepad controller (and I'm part of that 95%, even though I play on PC) so that feature isn't available.

I mean that literally, because with a controller, the keyboard is entirely dead except for renaming enchanted items (or Alt-Tab and other Windows-hooked stuff). I don't think even the ESC button works w/a controller activated.

But ... a radial menu like Assassins Creed or Deus Ex:HR could've been easily implemented for us gamepad players, but they couldn't be bothered to give us that, OR a decently functional Favorites menu thumb.gif

The only game I've (personally) played where there's really >1 'main quest' is Sacred 2, which had the "Path of Light" and "Path of Dark" major quest-lines. However, you just chose which one you want to play at the beginning, rather than it being based on the type of character you chose to play as. Although I think maybe there were a couple of types that could only do Light or Dark, but the majority of them could do either one.

Hey brettjv,

Not going to quote your whole post. Well written by the way.

Wanted to point out, in case you were anaware, you can actually rename items at the time of enchantment. I assume you could add '!!!' to the start of the name and it would pop up. No way to rename it after that if you forget. Or anything else for that matter.

Having a whole list of potions with poisons both above and below potions is beyond annoying. Some kind of sort function would be nice. Sort by date/value/function... I think you covered that at least indirectly but I use a lot of potions rolleyes.gif
