Am I making a mistake? Want to sell my P8Z68 Pro/GEN3 for mATX Maximus IV Gene-Z

I've been meaning to build a new rig for sometime so when I found a great deal on the i5 2500k, I couldn't pass it up. I picked up a P8Z68 Pro/GEN3 to go with it because it seemed like the best motherboard to fit my needs. Anyway, long story short, I never considered a mATX board and now I'm thinking that a mATX board (specifically the Maximus IV Gene-Z ) would better suit my needs. Before I sell my current board, I wanted to get some feedback and opinions.

I'll definitely be overclocking but I'm not planning on trying to break speed records here. I'll be doing some gaming (LoL, Skyrim, BF3 on med to high perhaps?) but don't plan on doing SLI or Crossfire. I'll probably have a boot SSD and a single, large HDD for storage so this enormous "mid" tower ATX cases with 6 HDD slots just seem very pointless to me. I think I really only need 2 5.25" drive bays - one for a fan controller and one for a ODD (though I haven't ruled out going external). I want a rig that's pretty quiet but I'm just planning on doing aircooling so it doesn't need to be totally silent, nor does it need to be frosty cold. I also want a case with a small footprint as this will be used in a small bedroom (hence the need for quiet, as well).

So after typing this out, it definitely seems pretty obvious I should go mATX but I'm just wondering if there's anything I'll be missing out on if I switch to mATX (never built a mATX rig before) or if ATX would be a better form factor for getting a good balance of silence / cooling. Thanks for any help and for making it through my wall of text!thumb.gif

I see no point in getting a mATX unless you are building a small rig...if you have an ATX case, I don't see why you would go mATX. Especially since you already have a really nice board.

Silence and cooling doesn't have much to do with your mobo.

If I were you I'd keep your board

edit...didn't see the desire for the small footprint case. Disregard what I said and get the mATX and small case.

I've got my Maximus IV Gene-Z68 shoved inside an HP Pavilion case for a stealthy SFF build ...

Built 001.JPG 006.JPG

but that MoBo or the NEW Asus Rampage IV Gene that will supposedly be out in January ... http://www.techpowerup.com/156365/ASUS-Rampage-IV-Gene-Detailed.html

drool.gif so the Maximus IV Gene-Z ain't going to be the ONLY mATX board worthy of consideration anymore !

Plus a Fractal Design ARC MINI ...

or a SilverStone Temjin TJ08-E case make for some really nice little builds, several of those combo's in our Maximus IV Gene-Z Club thumb.gif

Yeah, I think I've convinced myself to do it. I'm going to end up losing some money reselling the mobo and some functionality, but overall I'll be happier with a smaller form factor case.
